Aussie Lifestyle and Lingo! Trivia Quiz

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you continually make silly mistakes that upset an Aussie, what is he most likely to call you?

Answer: Drongo

Basically, a slow or dim witted person can be referred to as a drongo. You will occasionally hear some of the other terms "down under" but only generally by tourists. A "dill" is someone who makes an occasional mistake.
2. If an Aussie says someone is a six-pack short of a carton, what does he mean?

Answer: Below average in intelligence

Generally a person who is slow on the uptake of any joke, gag, or suggestion, can fit into this category. Other derivatives along the same lines are "Two slices short of a loaf of bread" , as well as "50 cents in the dollar". Generally said as a light hearted jibe.
3. As you may be aware, the Granny Smith apple was first propagated in Australia in 1868. Do you know the name of the propagator after whom it is named?

Answer: Maria Ann Smith

The Granny Smith was a chance propagation, which some speculate was caused more by insects and nature than good gardening.
4. If an Aussie says, "Hey cobber, boil the billy for a brew mate, I'm dry!", what have they asked you to do?

Answer: Mate, boil some water for a cup of tea or coffee, I am thirsty.

Cobber is a term of respect acknowledging friendship. To "boil the billy" comes originally from camping in the outback. Usually a "billy" is an can/tin that could hold water and had a bit of a hook or handle on it that was suspended over an open fire.

When the water started bubbling, tea leaves were added, and a nice cup of tea was had. Nowadays, this terminology carries on to switching the kettle on in the kitchen for a pot of tea or coffee. Finally, "dry" is parched or thirsty.
5. How many states does Australia have?

Answer: Six

New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania are all states. It also has 2 territories which are the Northern Territory, as well as the Australian Capital Territory.
6. Australia has many talented artists. One of the most talented, (in my opinion), appeared as a solo artist around 2006. He plays the guitar left handed as well as upside down. For a bit more of a challenge, he is also blind. 95% of his recordings are in his native aboriginal tongue. Final clue is that he was part of a famous aboriginal band that toured overseas.

Answer: Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.

What more can I say. The man is an absolute genius and I think of him when I feel that I have been shortchanged in life. His cd is simply called "Gurrumul", and is released by Skinnyfish Music.
7. In The Northern Territory, where are the only safe places to swim?

Answer: Swimming pool and bathtub

Saltwater crocodiles grow to over 5 metres long and can travel phenomonal distances to appear in waterways miles away from the nearest main tributary. Although called saltwater, they have to spend a couple of months each year in freshwater to cleanse their system.
8. Australia lays claim to being the proud owner of the biggest living thing in the world. Do you know what it is?

Answer: Great Barrier Reef

Stretching nearly 1800 klm down the Queensland coastline, the reef has had a hard time with bleaching during the last 20 years, but it has amazed scientists that even though we are still putting our pollution into the Pacific Ocean, as well as global warming, the coral has recently started to grow back better than ever.
9. Australia is an extremely vast country with varying types of roads, highways, as well as conditions which affect the speed that vehicles are legally allowed to travel at. What is one speed sign that you will no longer see in Australia?

Answer: 160 kph ( 96 mph )

Previously, some states or territories used to remove all speed limits and leave it to the drivers discretion to travel at safe speeds. This was ceased 2005 and now the max speed permitted is 110. When roadworks are in progress, you must obey the speed limit ( in red ) even though it is normally a 100-110 kph zone. This is purely for the safety of our highway maintenance personnel.
10. Australia's first fleet landed in which year?

Answer: 1788

Founded by Captain James Cook in 1770 (East Coast), the first fleet arrived in 1788. We have come a long way from being a bunch of convicts and lags. Whilst other explorers sighted parts of Australia prior to James Cook, he is officially recognised as the founder of our beautiful country.
