Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the Federal Meteorological Handbook No. 1, which of these is mentioned as a difference between fog and mist?

Answer: Fog reduces visibility more than mist does

Fog consists of tiny water particles based at the Earth's surface and reduces visibility to less than 5/8 of a land mile (as opposed to a nautical mile). Whereas a drizzle falls to the ground, fog does not. Mist is also made of water particles in the atmosphere, although in a less dense amount; it reduces visibility therefore to a less extent. Fog is typically at or near ground level, and mist can also be near the ground, but may be at slightly higher altitudes also, depending on humidity and air conditions. Fog forms when the air cools to the dew point, forming condensation, typically during early morning or late evening as the temperature falls. Mist forms when water vapor condenses, when humidity is high without much temperature variation.
2. "The fog comes on little cat feet. It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on." That is a famous poem titled "Fog" written by which famous poet in his 1916 collection called "Chicago Poems"?

Answer: Carl Sandburg

"Fog" is considered one of Carl Sandburg's most well-known poems and contributed greatly to his popularity and influence in the 20th century American poetry scene. He was inspired to write "Fog" one day in Chicago when he observed a fog over Chicago harbor. He was carrying his book of Japanese haiku with him in that moment, and decided to create what he called an "American Haiku." He wrote the short poem on a piece of newspaper.
3. "The Mist" was a 1980 novella that was adapted into a film in 2007. Who wrote "The Mist"?

Answer: Stephen King

Lynn Stopkewich wrote the screenplay for the 1996 Canadian erotic drama called "Kissed." Robert Whitlow wrote the thriller novel, "The List", and Klas Östergren wrote a novel called "Twist". In Stephen King's "The Mist", a father named David Drayton and his young son take a trip to the local supermarket while the mother stays home.

At the store, sirens start going off, ushering in a mist that encompasses the building, and in fact, as he finds out, the whole town of Brighton, in Maine. It gets worse, as terrible creatures, and monsters attack the building.

The film version was directed by Frank Darabont who also directed Stephen King's "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile".
4. In the western United States, what kind of fog is referred to as a pogonip?

Answer: Freezing fog

Pogonip refers to a dense winter fog that is made up of frozen particles. It is a weather condition that usually found in deep mountain valleys in the western United States, and is accompanied by cold temperatures and high humidity. Breathing in a pogonip can actually be harmful, causing damage to the lungs.

5. What is the phrase for a light drizzle that resembles a mist or fog?

Answer: Scotch mist

A Scotch mist is characterized by a cold mist that is like a very fine light rain, often occurring in upland areas, such as in Scotland, thus the name Scotch mist. Other parts of the United Kingdom, also have this weather phenomenon, combining fog and drizzle. It is a heavy type of wet fog and causes reduced visibility. Usage of the phrase "Scotch mist" has also extended into a metaphor for something difficult to see or perhaps an illusion that doesn't exist at all.
6. A London fog refers to various different things, one of which though is a thick fog partly caused by air pollution. What is the other name this London fog goes by?

Answer: Pea soup fog

Pea soup fog, aka London fog, was a thick, yellowish fog assisted by pollution to appear that way, incited in the mid-19th century expansion of industrial waste and domestic coal-burning smoke spewed into the London air. Winter months were worse causing upticks in the public's distress.
