Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In order to fulfill the wish for the rain to go away, who asked us "Who'll Stop the Rain?"?

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

The song by CCR appeared on the 1970 album "Cosmo's Factory" and was released as a double-sided single together with "Travellin' Band". The song was written by John Fogerty and for a long time it was thought that this was a protest song against the war in Vietnam. John Fogerty dispelled all that by saying that the song was inspired by events at the Woodstock festival and specifically the rain that poured down.
2. Should we employ the help of which "Rain Man" to make the rain go away?

Answer: Dustin Hoffman

In Barry Levinson's "Rain Man" Dustin Hoffman is Raymond Babbitt, an autistic savant, and Tom Cruise is his brother Charlie. Charlie discovers Raymond's existence after his father dies and leaves a three million bequest to the Institute where Raymond lives.

He decides to check his brother out of the Institute and they embark on a journey across USA. Raymond has terrific mathematical abilities and can recall facts and figures but he is easily upset and isolates himself from his surroundings.
3. Oh no! The rain is not going away. There is a great flood now. Where in the Greek version of the flood myth did the Ark, manned by Deucalion, make landfall?

Answer: Parnassus

According to the Greek myth Zeus decided to destroy mankind because of their meanness, greediness and disobedience towards the Gods. Deucalion, son of Prometheus, and his wife Pyrrha were advised by Prometheus to build an ark as Zeus had decided to flood the earth.

It rained for nine days and nine nights and all the people perished except those who managed to climb up the mountains. The ark came to rest on Mount Parnassus in Central Greece. The couple persistently pleaded with the Gods to regenerate mankind. Finally the Gods relented and they were asked to throw "the bones of the earth" over their shoulders while keeping their eyes shut.

The couple obeyed and for every stone that Deucalion threw a new man sprung and a new woman appeared for every stone Pyrrha threw over her shoulder.
4. This is really no good. The rain has not stopped and someone has gone on record with "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall". Which singer first released this song?

Answer: Bob Dylan

The song was a track on Dylan's 1963 album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan". It was a protest song akin to a revelation that foresaw children carrying guns "I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children", a tree dripping with blood "I saw a black branch with blood that kept dripping", dead oceans "I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans" and endless graveyards "I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard".
5. This is really silly. The rain is pelting down and we have which musical going on about "The Rain in Spain"?

Answer: My Fair Lady

The film was released in 1964 and was based on the Lerner and Lowe musical, which was based on George Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion". Audrey Hepburn was Eliza Doolittle, with Marni Dixon providing the singing voice, Rex Harrison was Professor Higgins and Stanley Holloway was Alfred P. Doolittle.

The song was an exercise in pronunciation with which the Professor was trying to iron-out the cockney accent of Eliza.
6. The rain won't go away and Zeus is taking advantage of which young lady, taking the form of Golden Rain?

Answer: Danae

After Danae's father, Acrisius, was told by the oracle at Delphi that his grandson would kill him, he constructed an underground chamber in which he imprisoned his daughter. Zeus took a fancy to Danae and came to her in the form of golden rain through the sky-light.

The result of the union was Perseus. Acrisius cast Danae and her baby boy in the sea hoping that they would drown. They never did and the prophesy was fulfilled during an athletics meet, when Perseus by accident hit Acrisius on the head with a discus.
7. The rain is not going away our wish still remains unfulfilled. Maybe we should invoke the help of which Slavic goddess of rain?

Answer: Dodola

Dodola was the wife of the god of thunder Perun. Together they had the twins Jarilo, personification of spring, and Morana the personification of winter. Dodola is depicted wearing vines that are knitted together and with her rain drops provided sustenance to mankind.

The other three options are Hindu goddesses.
8. The rain is easing now. The invocation appears to have worked. Only a few "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head". Which film first featured this song?

Answer: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The song was written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach and performed by B.J. Thomas. It won an Oscar for best original song. The song is playing while Paul Newman is riding a bicycle and doing various acrobatics on it while Katherine Ross watches from a hay loft.
9. The rain has stopped completely and a great big rainbow has appeared. Who was the Roman goddess of the rainbow?

Answer: Iris

The Romans borrowed Iris from Greek mythology. Iris was a messenger of the gods and she was also goddess of sea and sky. Her parents were Thaumas and Elektra. Aurora was the Roman goddess of the dawn. Isis and Osiris were Egyptian deities.
10. The rain has gone away and now daddy can come out and play. The sun is shining brightly and a chorus of "Let the Sunshine in" echoes around. In which musical was this song first performed?

Answer: Hair

"Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical" was a rock musical that was first staged on Broadway in 1967 and a year later in London. It was written by Gerome Ragni, James Rado and Galt McDermot. The musical was very controversial due to its language use, nudity and lack of respect towards "norms". Many of the songs became anthems against the war in Vietnam.
