Pachyderm comes from the Greek and means thick-skinned. Hippos, rhinos and elephants are all pachyderms.

Jumbo was born in 1861 in French Sudan. Two years later he was taken to Paris, where he lived at the zoo. In 1865 he moved to London and made his home at the zoo in Regent's Park. He was sold to Barnum and Bailey, for their circus, in 1882, and travelled across the Atlantic Ocean in a large crate aboard the SS Assyrian Monarch.

He toured with the circus all over the United States and Canada, until an unfortunate collision with a railway locomotive at St. Thomas, Ontario in Canada in 1885 proved fatal.

Many captive elephants have been encouraged to paint pictures, which would usually be described as abstract, although some have been trained to paint flowers, and even elephants! There seems to be a ready demand for their work.

Two New York musicians (Richard Lair and David Soldier) have worked with Thai elephants to create an orchestra. The orchestra consists mainly of large percussion instruments, and can sound similar to a Javan gamelan. At least two CDs have been produced.

Lulu had been brought to the studio by her keeper to add colour to the announcement of the forthcoming summer trip to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). She had been given a bucket of water to drink to encourage her to stay in one place, with somewhat unfortunate consequences! The keeper was unable to control her, and was eventually knocked over and dragged off the set by Lulu.

Usually the programme was broadcast live, but, as there were no studios available later on, that edition was recorded in advance. The presenters were convinced that there would be a re-take after the fiasco. However Biddy Baxter (the editor) thought it was very funny and decided to keep the whole episode. Had it been a live broadcast, the programme would have been faded out to allow for the next item on the schedule before the end of the incident, and it would never have been seen.
