Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Different parts of the sequence are separated by a greater than sign (>). What word links the following famous quotes? Napoleon Bonaparte - "is a set of lies agreed upon" > Winston Churchill - "is written by the victors" > Henry Ford "is more or less bunk" > Mark Twain - "doesn't repeat itself"?

Answer: History

All four of the men in this sequence have many famous quotes attributed to them, and the ones given above specifically relate to history.
Twain's quotation goes on to say that, although history does not repeat itself, "it does rhyme".
2. What comes next in the sequence? Sun > Moon > Tyr > ?

Answer: Odin

Well done if you got this tricky question correct. The list of words above are the root words of the days of the week, starting from Sunday (Sun), through Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Tyr) to Wednesday (Odin or Wodin).

Odin and Tyr are both Germanic gods. Other Germanic gods who lend their names to days of the week include Thor (Thursday) and Frigg/Frey (Friday). Saturday is named for Saturn (Roman god of agriculture) and Sunday and Monday are named for the Sun and Moon respectively.
3. Find the link among these four films? "Scarface" > "The Hangover" > "Two Brothers" > "The Jungle Book"

Answer: Tigers

All of these films feature at least one tiger.
Blink and you'll miss it, Al Pacino's character in "Scarface" (1983) flaunts his wealth to his friends, showing them round his luxurious mansion and to his garden, where he keeps his pet tiger.
In the 2009 film "The Hangover", the group wake up dazed and confused, only to find a snarling tiger in their hotel bathroom.
More of a family film, "Two Brothers" (2004) tells the story of two tiger cubs separated at birth, but reunited years later.
Finally, the evil Shere Khan in Disney's "The Jungle Book" is represented as a tiger.
4. What word completes the fourth clue in this sequence? Africa - White Rhinoceros > Africa - Hippopotamus > Asia - Elephant > Africa - ?

Answer: Elephant

Many will know that the African elephant is the heaviest terrestrial animal on the planet, but congratulations if you were able to decipher this sequence. The first word gives the common name of the animals (in order from fourth heaviest to the heaviest), followed by the continent where the animal is found in the wild.
5. What is the link between these four men? William Shakespeare > Michael Faraday > Edward Elgar > Adam Smith.

Answer: All have appeared on the Bank of England £20 note

From 1970 (Shakespeare) to 2007 onwards (Adam Smith), all of the above have adorned the £20 note circulated by the Bank of England.
William Shakespeare was the first historical person to be depicted on a Bank of England bank note, and was followed by many others, including Isaac Newton, Christopher Wren and Charles Darwin.
6. What name completes the fourth clue in this sequence? 1977 - Jimmy Connors > 1978 - Jimmy Connors > 1979 - Roscoe Tanner > 1980 - ?

Answer: John McEnroe

This sequence may have been spotted by the keen tennis fans amongst you. One of the greatest champions in Wimbledon's history, this sequence refers to the four most recent Wimbledon Championships won by Bjorn Borg (with the year he won and the player he defeated in the final). Borg won this grand slam a consecutive five times (his first, 1976 against Nastase in the final, is not shown above). The 1980 Wimbledon final is held as one of the greatest grand slam finals ever played - a 5-set nail-biter between Borg and McEnroe.

The 4th set tie-break of this match (which ended up 16-18 in Borg's favour) is a favourite of the BBC when rain delays halt match play at Wimbledon.
7. What is the link between the following? Grenada > The Zanzibar archipelago > Portsmouth Point > The Maluku Islands.

Answer: All have been known as the Spice Island(s)

These islands were given their names (or nicknames) by early traders, who valued (and still value) the spices found there.
The floral diversity on islands is far greater than that on the mainland. Also, since plants found on island chains are isolated from continental ones, they tend to be far more unique, many plants being found on only one island on the planet. For example, hundreds of kinds of lobelioid (a flowering plant) are found on the Hawaiian archipelago. These make up almost 10% of Hawaii's native flora, and none is present anywhere else on Earth.
8. What comes next in this sequence? sapiens > Homo > Hominidae > ?

Answer: Primate

Ah, the old "King Prawn Curry Or Fish Gut Soup". This mnemonic helps me remember the hierarchical order of classification of living organisms (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species).
The above sequence gives, in order from the most specific grouping (the species), the taxonomic classifications of human beings. Humans belong to the order Primate, to which apes, monkeys, lemurs and tarsiers belong.
9. What comes next in this sequence? James I (James VI of Scotland) > George I > Edward VII > ?

Answer: George V

This sequence refers to the first monarchs of royal houses which ruled over Great Britain. In chronological order, they are the houses of Stuart (James I (James VI of Scotland)), Hanover (George I), Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (Edward VII) and Windsor (George V).
Although James was never officially king of Great Britain (he was James I of England and James VI of Scotland), his house, the House of Stuart, ruled Great Britain for a short period when the kingdoms were merged in 1707 during the reign of Queen Anne.
10. What comes next in this sequence? Uruguay > Italy > England > ?

Answer: West Germany

These are the first four nations to have won the FIFA world cup when also hosting the event. Argentina (1978) and France (1998) are the next two nations to hold claim to this record.
The home advantage was also felt in the 2012 Olympics in London, where Great Britain & Northern Ireland won more medals than they had in any Olympic games in over 100 years.
