Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Different parts of the sequence are separated by a greater than sign (>). Which of the following completes the sequence? Deputy Prime Minister of the UK from 1989-1990 whose first name is Geoffrey > A wolf in folk tales or a rabbit in Wallace and Gromit > The SI derived unit of power > ?

Answer: A river that forms part of the boundary between Wales and England

The sequence gives homonyms of some of the six basic questions, also known as the Five Ws (and one H). In order, they are Howe (Geoffrey Howe), Were (Werewolf or were-rabbit), Watt (the SI derived unit of power), and Wye (the river that forms part of the boundary between Wales and England).

The three incorrect clues can be defined as "Victoria", "Coren", and "Rules", and is a reference the talented host of the BBC4 programme "Only Connect", on which this quiz is based.
2. What comes next in this sequence? Cripple > Little Boots > Of the Tiber > ?

Answer: The Illustrious One

This sequence lists the English translations of the names of the first four Roman Emperors in reverse chronological order beginning with Claudius ("cripple"), Caligula ("little boots"), Tiberius ("of the Tiber"), and, the fourth in the sequence and so the first Roman emperor, Augustus, meaning "The illustrious one". This name can also mean "the great one" or "increasing".

For those curious, the incorrect answers are taken from the meaning of my first name (like the lord), the scientific name of the llama (Llama glama), and the English translation of the scientific name of the fruit fly, which has been invaluable to the field of life sciences, which I study at university.
3. What comes next in this sequence? Gregory VI > Celestine V > Gregory XII > ?

Answer: Benedict XVI

This sequence refers to Papal resignations in chronological order. Gregory VI resigned in 1046 after being accused of bribing his predecessor to leave the office. He therefore came to the Papal office following the resignation of another man - Benedict IX. Following Gregory VI, Celestine V was the next to resign after less than a year as pope, due to an apparent incompetence. Gregory XII was the next man to resign the papacy and did so in 1415.

He would be the last man to do this this for almost 600 years, until 2013, when Benedict XVI announced he would be leaving the Papal office, stating he was "too frail" to continue.
4. What comes next in this sequence? 1 - Vietnam > 2 - Panama > 4 - New Zealand > 5 - ?

Answer: China

It's an old quizzer favourite - flags! This sequence refers to national flags that contain an increasing number of stars. As well as China, Samoa and Honduras also feature five stars on their national flags and so would also be correct answers. There is no national flag that contains 3 stars.
5. What comes next in this sequence? Characters who had a role in Zeus' life > Titans and Giants > Characters from the works of Shakespeare and Alexander pope > ?

Answer: Greek water deities

I'm guilty of yielding to another old quiz favourite. This sequence refers to the logic behind the naming of the satellites of the gas giants in our solar system in their order of distance from the sun. These are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. This question combines two of my three childhood interests - astronomy and mythology.

The first four moons of Jupiter - Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto - were all lovers of Zeus. The convention of naming Jupiter's moons after Zeus' lovers continued until the number of moons exceeded the number of lovers (yes, even Zeus had limits).

The subsequent moons were named after other people who were descended from Zeus. Saturn's moons were named for Greek and Roman giants and titans. Again, the number of moons were far greater than thought and, eventually, names of giants had to be borrowed from Norse mythology. Neptune's moons also take their names from characters from Greek mythology. Uranus somewhat bucks the trend in astronomy as its moons are named for Shakespearean characters, and characters from Alexander Pope's "Rape of the Lock".
6. What links the following? A dead German soldier > An Australian slave transporter > A masked member of the Crazy 88s > Jimmie Dimmick

Answer: Cameos of Quentin Tarantino in his own films

Quentin Tarantino often makes cameos in his films. These can be fairly important characters such as Jimmy Dimmick in "Pulp Fiction" who is key to the scene following the accidental shooting of a young man in the back of Vincent and Jules' care. Additionally, Tarantino can play very minor roles, such as the masked member of the Crazy 88s in "Kill Bill", which I admittedly had never noticed despite seeing the film countless times.
7. What comes next in this sequence? I was once a treehouse > I lived in a cake > But I never saw the way > ?

Answer: The orange slayed the rake

These are the nonsense lyrics from the song "Llama Llama Duck", which we, in the Revenge of the Llamas, have to recite from memory in order to confirm our membership. Okay, that bit isn't true, but we do see it as a kind of unofficial anthem. This ubiquitous and annoyingly memorable tune first appeared in the 2000s and has contributed to a surge in internet attention to llamas that Nicholas Cage would be jealous of.
8. Which of the following most appropriately completes the following sequence? Michael Jackson (1995) > George Frederic Handel (1717) > Aled Jones (1985) > ?

Answer: Jerry Lee Lewis (1957)

This sequence refers to the four classical elements - Earth, Water, Air and Fire. However, I have devilishly given the sequence using famous songs/pieces of music which mention these elements in their title. Michael Jackson's 1995 track was "Earth Song", with Handel's "Water Music" next, and Aled Jones' "Walking in the Air".

This left a space for "Fire" which is part of the classic track by Jerry Lee Lewis, "Great Balls of Fire".
9. What word links the following? Lehman brothers in 2008 > Over 21 in blackjack > Feminist magazine founded in 1993 > Sculpture of Nefertiti in the Egyptian museum of Berlin

Answer: Bust

These clues are all linked by the word "bust". Bust is an economic term used for financial collapse and is in contrast to boom. "Bust" can also be used to describe a sculpture of a person's head and shoulders. That of Nefertiti is one of the most famous examples of this type of sculpture and is praised for its quality and, in particular, it's symmetry - not least because it is more than 3,000 years old.
10. What completes this sequence? "Possession" - Arsenic > "The Children of Men" - Palladium > "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" - Cesium > "The Time Machine" - ?

Answer: Mercury

Even when it comes to literature (one of my weaker subjects), I cannot resist injecting a hint of science. This question first names a title of a book written by an author usually known by two first initials. The second part of each clue gives the element that is denoted by these two initials if they were viewed as chemical symbols. "Possession" was written by A. S. Byatt (arsenic), "The Children of Men" was written by P. D. James (palladium), "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" is a work by C. S. Lewis (cesium), and, finally, "The Time Machine" is one of the best known works by H. G. Wells, whose initials represent the chemical symbol of mercury (from the Latin "hydrargyrum").
