Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are lying in bed, outside you hear a blood curdling scream. You look, but can see nothing. You lie awake all night imagining all kinds of terrible things that might have happened. Morning comes, no sign of any bodies or anything awful having happened. What animal noise did you probably hear?

Answer: Foxes screaming

Foxes have a very loud, quite disturbing, scream that sounds very human. Female foxes scream to attract a mate, and most screaming is heard during the mating season. Sometimes however male foxes will also scream loudly as a territorial statement, or if they are injured and require help.
2. It's 2.00 in the morning, and you are woken up by a loud booming noise. At first you think there is a thunderstorm, but no, no storm. You are nowhere near an artillery range or anything like that. Did you imagine it, or dream it, or is there actually a name for these noises, and if so what is it?

Answer: Mistpouffers

Mistpouffers are usually heard close to large bodies of water. As they have been reported from all over the world for several hundred years they are not artillery fire. Neither has any link between them and any earthquake or volcanic activity been established.

In all probability they are the sounds of a far off thunderstorm which has been able to travel farther than normal due to atmospheric conditions.
3. On a sightseeing trip you are alone in a chapel in the Tower of London. Out of the corner of your eye you see a headless woman. When you turn to face her fully she has vanished. A trick of the light, or did you see a ghost? Whose ghost might it have been?

Answer: Anne Boleyn

Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII, was beheaded at the Tower of London in 1536. She is buried in the chapel of St Peter's ad Vincula in the Tower precincts. Many people have reported seeing her ghost both in the chapel, and in the rooms in which she was imprisoned prior to her execution.

She is not the only ghost said to haunt the Tower of London, which is one of the most haunted places in London.
4. It's just your imagination, we've all had that said to us, but sometimes it isn't. In which Ray Bradbury book are two boys' fears about a travelling carnival all too true?

Answer: Something Wicked This Way Comes

In this 1962 novel two 13 year old boys, Jim Nightshade and William Halloway, encounter a strange and dangerous travelling carnival. The tattoos on the illustrated man come to life. If you ride the carousel backwards you lose a year of your age for every revolution. The skeleton man really is a skeleton.
The boys and William's father must defeat the carnival to avoid being taken over by it for ever.
5. Often the things we imagine are not at all threatening. Imaginary friends for example. In the film "A Beautiful Mind" starring Russell Crowe, who is John Nash's imaginary friend and room mate?

Answer: Charles Herman

"A Beautiful Mind" tells the story of brilliant mathematician John Nash, who was also a paranoid schizophrenic. His imaginary friend, Charles Herman, first appears to him at Princeton College, and he, together with his niece Marcee, appear on and off throughout his entire life. William Parcher is also a figment of his imagination, but is nowhere near as friendly a delusion as Charles.
6. The vivid imaginations of Matthew Graham, Tony Jordan and Ashley Pharaoh gave us which two BBC Television series, with titles taken from David Bowie songs?

Answer: Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes

"Life on Mars" ran from January 2006 to April 2007. The follow up series, "Ashes to Ashes", ran from February 2008 to May 2010.

The two series combined science fiction with a police drama. Gene Hunt, played by Philip Glenister, became something of a cult figure, and the phrase "fire up the Quattro" became something of a catch phrase for "Ashes to Ashes". The final episode reveals that the world inhabited by the characters is in fact a sort of halfway house for dead police officers, where they stay until they are ready to move on.
7. Is there something scratching at your window late at night, or something hiding in the wardrobe, or worse, under the bed? What is a generic name for the monster children often imagine is out to get them?

Answer: The Bogeyman

For years parents have told children that if they don't behave the bogeyman will get them. It shouldn't then come as a surprise to them when those children start to see imaginary monsters in their bedrooms at night. The bogeyman has no specific appearance attached to him, he takes whatever form the imagination of the individual decides on.

He is universal and can be male or female, or neither.
8. Some people imagine they can see the future. Some actually can. Who was the Greek prophetess whose prophecies were correct, but were always ignored?

Answer: Cassandra

In Greek mythology Cassandra was the daughter of King Priam. Apollo was in love with her and gave her the gift of prophecy. She did not return his love, so he placed a curse on her. This meant that no-one would ever believe her prophecies, saying that she made them up, or they were a figment of her imagination. She was eventually murdered by Clytemnestra and Aegisthus.
9. Narnia, Utopia, Hogwarts, all of these are imaginary places. Which imaginary place comes from a play by Aristophanes?

Answer: Cloud Cuckoo Land

In Cloud Cuckoo Land everything is perfect. The name comes from "The Birds", a play by Aristophanes written around 414 BC. The phrase was later used by Hitler in "Mein Kampf" when referring to the policies of his political opponents. In modern usage the phrase "living in cloud cuckoo land" has come to mean anyone with an unrealistic or naive view of the world.
10. Today I think I have gout, yesterday it was pneumonia, tomorrow it may be Ebola virus, or malaria. What is the name for someone who constantly imagines they are ill?

Answer: Hypochondriac

Hypochondria is in fact a medical condition. Sufferers are convinced they have some terrible or undiagnosed illness, and nothing will convince them otherwise. Quite often the stress following the serious illness or death of a family member or close friend will trigger the condition.

Kleptomaniacs are compulsive thieves
Narcissists take extreme notice of their own appearance
Pyromaniacs are excessively fond of fire and often start fires for their own gratification.
