Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is the mistake in the following sentence? In 1889, George Washington became the first president of the United States.

Answer: Washington became president in 1789.

The mistake in that sentence is that 1889 should be 1789. After Congress decided that the leader should be a single president, it had to be determined who that person was. George Washington was unanimously elected president in 1789 and continued his presidency for two terms.
2. What is wrong with this sentence? In William Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet", both Romeo and Juliet die.

Answer: There is nothing wrong with the statement.

Near the end of Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet", Juliet takes a drug and pretends to die to avoid marrying Paris. However, Romeo was never informed of this. Instead Romeo believes Juliet to actually be dead, so he buys poison, visits Juliet in her crypt, then poisons himself. Juliet wakes up, sees Romeo dead, and then stabs herself with Romeo's sword.
3. What mistake has been made in this sentence? Black and white are colors of light.

Answer: Black isn't a color of light, but white is.

A color is determined by what light gets reflected to a person's eyes. For example, green light results from having green being reflected and all others colors absorbed. Black is when every color is absorbed; therefore, black is not a color. White is when every color is reflected; therefore, white is a color.
4. Where is the mistake in the following sentence? In Monopoly, players use a spinner to move from space to space where they can buy, mortgage, or auction properties.

Answer: Monopoly uses dice.

Monopoly was created in 1934 by the Parker Brothers and was a popular game to play during the Great Depression. In the game, players roll two dice and move their tokens to different spaces, most of which are properties. If a player lands on a property that hasn't been bought, that person may either buy it or auction it.

Some players don't do either and wait until it gets landed on again. If a player's fees become too much, a person can mortgage properties to help pay the fee off. They can also sell hotels and houses to do the same thing.

A person is out of the game when he or she goes bankrupt. The last person not to go bankrupt wins the game.
5. What is wrong with the following sentence? In Greek mythology, Hades, one of the sons of Zeus, is the ruler of the underworld.

Answer: Hades was a brother of Zeus.

Hades is the oldest brother of Zeus and Poseidon. Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon each drew lots to determine the area that they should rule over. Zeus drew the longest, which means that he would be the supreme ruler. Poseidon drew the next best and became the god of the sea. Hades drew the worst and became ruler of the underworld, Tartarus.

Despite being ruler of the underworld, Hades is not seen as a dark or evil god.
6. What mistake has been made in this sentence? "The Silver Chair", by C.S. Lewis was published in 1956 and was the last book in "The Chronicles of Narnia" series.

Answer: "The Silver Chair" was not the last book in the series.

"The Silver Chair" was the fourth book published and the sixth book chronologically in C.S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia" series. People have debated whether the correct order is the published order or the written order. C.S. Lewis mentioned that either way is acceptable. Whatever way the reader may view as correct, "The Last Battle" is the seventh and final story in the series.
7. Where is the mistake in the following sentence? In golf, scoring two below par on a hole is called an eagle.

Answer: There is nothing wrong with the statement.

Golfing terms are used to indicate how well a golfer does in relation to what the par score is on any particular hole. Bogey is one over par. Double bogey is two over par and so on. Birdie is one below par. Eagle is two below par. Albatross is three below par.

A condor is four below par. These terms are named after birds and their lengths. For example, an albatross is larger than eagle, so an albatross has more shots below par than an eagle.
8. What is wrong with this sentence? It was the bombing of Pearl Harbor that caused the United States to enter the First World War.

Answer: It was the Second World War during which the bombing happened.

Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which resulted in the United States entering the Second World War. The bombing, which lasted for approximately two hours, resulted in the destruction of approximately 1/3 of the fleet at Pearl Harbor. The decision to bomb Pearl Harbor was because the Japanese government believed the United States was one of the only countries that could stop the Japanese army.

Although war between the United States and Japan seemed likely, it was not until then that war was officially declared. President Franklin Roosevelt referred to this as "a day which will live in infamy".
9. What mistake has been made in this sentence? In 1937, the first full-length animated Disney movie, "Pinocchio", was released.

Answer: "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was the first full-length animated Disney movie.

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was the first full-length animated Disney movie. It was released in 1937. Even though during production, many people thought it would be a failure (they called it Disney's Folly), the movie would be a hit and became (at the time) the highest grossing film. The second full-length animated Disney movie would be "Pinocchio", released in 1940.
10. Where is the mistake in the following sentence? In the Old Testament of the Bible, people can read the Gospels which tell the story of Jesus.

Answer: The Gospels are found in the New Testament.

The Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are found in the New Testament of the Bible. It is in these four books that a person can read about Jesus. Each book focuses on a different aspect of Jesus's life. Matthew focuses on Jesus's ministry, Mark on His miracles, Luke on His humanity, and John on His divinity.
