Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Filming for 'The Lord of the Rings' took place in many sites across New Zealand - almost any town you visit can show you where some scene was filmed - but most of the filming sets have been removed, leaving the original spectacular scenery to be enjoyed. While you can plan a tour for yourself, most of the filming took place on private land, so it is hard to get to the actual spots. Joining a tour will get you access (but I would not recommend the folks behind this brochure, who seem to have overlooked a few petty details in their planning, like getting home).

The North Island has more filming sites, and other Tolkien-based tourist activities, than the South Island, and the Hobbiton set on the Alexander farm near Matamata (you will know you have arrived when you see the road sign that reads "Welcome to Hobbiton") has been turned into a major tourist attraction. The site was used for external shots only - internal scenes were filmed on a set in Wellington, aka Wellywood.

In Wellington you can also visit the workshop where many of the sets and costumes were constructed - unsurprisingly, it is set up with tours, and a shop where you can collect 'LOTR' memorabilia. Day trips through the suburbs of the city, up the Hutt River, and through several National Parks will take you to a number of sites where dramatic scenes were filmed, taking full advantage of the North Island's volcanic scenery.

While the South Island was also used extensively for filming, virtually nothing remains to be seen - aside from more spectacular scenery. Queenstown is a good place to base yourself, and tours often provide an opportunity to see how the filming was actually done - reenacting a scene so you can see the camera trickery that was employed, for example. While you are in Queenstown, you might enjoy a visit to the Skippers Canyon on the Shotover River, where the scene of Arwen calling a flood to wash away the Ring Wraiths who are pursuing the Fellowship was filmed. Be warned, though - the drive there is pretty rough, to put it mildly.

The last major filming centre mentioned in this quiz is Fiordland National Park, where you can find Snowdon Forest (which stood in for Fangorn Forest), Mavora Lakes (where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli trailed Merry and Pippin after they had been captured by orcs), Kepler Mire (the Dead Marshes through which Gollum led Sam and Frodo) and Mt Gunn, near the Franz Josef Glacier, where the beacons were lit between Gondor and Rohan, perhaps the most spectacular scene filmed in the region.
