Clara Wieck, a talented pianist, who was his wife, encouraged him to compose not only for piano but also symphonies. Schumann had a number of mental health problems that for a long time were mistakenly attributed to syphilis. He had periods of depression which prevented him from composing and others of euphoria in which he produced countless pieces.

Schumann could have become an accomplished pianist but at the age of 22, he started to complain about the condition in his right hand which numbed and stiffened his fingers, which ironically only happened when he was playing. Today it is known that Schumann had a form of "focal dystonia", which is restricted to a group of muscles, and that when it is related to the patient's activity it is called "professional dystonia", triggered by the repetition of a movement. This late diagnosis was made by researchers who analyzed, among other things, his diaries and his correspondence with his mother.
