Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A description of someone cowardly

Answer: Yellow Bellied

The term 'yellow belly' to describe someone who is acting cowardly comes from US slang. According the Oxford English Dictionary the first recorded use of the term comes from a study of gangs in Chicago written by F.M. Thrasher in 1927. The specific origin of the phrase, and indeed the association of the colour yellow with cowardice in particular, is unknown but the colour yellow was associated with treachery in medieval times and it is possible the meaning shifted from describing someone who was a traitor to someone who was a coward.
2. North American name for a wasp

Answer: Yellowjacket

A yellowjacket is a term used in North America for insects in the genera Vespula and Dolichovespula. While the term can be used generically for all wasps certain specific species from North America include the name yellowjacket in their common names such as the southern yellowjacket or the aerial yellowjacket.

The sports teams at Georgia Tech use the Yellow Jackets for their team names and use a stylised yellowjacket called Buzz as their mascot.
3. Animated film featuring The Beatles' music

Answer: Yellow Submarine

'Yellow Submarine' is an animated film released in 1968 featuring the music of The Beatles. While the members of the band appear as characters in the movie their voices were not recorded by the band members and were instead voiced by actors. The plot of the movie sees The Beatles free Pepperland from the control of the music-hating Blue Meanies.
4. 1970 single by Joni Mitchell

Answer: Big Yellow Taxi

'Big Yellow Taxi' was a single first released in 1970 by the Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. As well as performing the song Mitchell also wrote and composed it. The song has become one of Mitchell's best known tracks and has been covered by a number of other artists.
5. Telephone directory of businesses

Answer: Yellow Pages

The first official 'Yellow Pages' directory was created by Reuben H. Donnelley in 1886 covering the US city of Chicago. The name 'Yellow Pages' came about because they were printed on yellow coloured paper which distinguished them from the non-commercial directories which used white paper. With the increasing use of the internet the 'Yellow Pages' has become largely obsolete in many countries and the last UK 'Yellow Pages' books were distributed in 2019.
6. Signifies the leader of the Tour de France

Answer: Yellow Jersey

The yellow jersey is a coloured cycling jersey worn by the leader of the Tour de France cycle race. The Tour de France was first held in 1903 but the first official yellow jersey was not awarded until the 1919 race. The reason for the jersey being the colour yellow is unknown for certain with the most probable reason being because it reflected the colour of the paper that sponsoring newspaper 'L'Auto' was printed on, however, some have posited that because yellow was a less popular colour the manufacturer was less likely to run out of fabric to make the jerseys at short notice.
7. Pigment used in artists' paints

Answer: Cadmium Yellow

Cadmium yellow is a bright yellow pigment that has been used to colour artists' paints since the the 19th century. The colour is named after the metal cadmium which was first discovered in 1817, however it was not until the 1840s that cadmium sulfide was synthesised and it is this chemical from which the pigment is derived.

Originally the colour was very expensive and many artists could not afford to use it, however those who could preferred it to existing yellow pigments as it produced a more vibrant shade which did not fade as quickly when exposed to light.
8. Shown to indicate a player has been cautioned in soccer

Answer: Yellow Card

Yellow cards were first used at the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Their use was the brain child of English referee Ken Aston following confusion during a match at the 1966 World Cup when it was not clear that a referee had cautioned players during a match, this led Aston to come up with the red and yellow card system which a referee could show to make it clear that a player had been sanctioned.

A player is shown a yellow card for committing various acts of foul play. Players shown a yellow cards in soccer can continue to play in the match however if they are shown a second yellow card during the game this results in a red card and they are sent off for the remainder of the game. Players can also be shown a straight red card for more serious foul play.
9. Processed uranium ore

Answer: Yellowcake

Yellowcake is a yellow coloured, powdered form of the radioactive metal uranium. Yellowcake mostly consists of a form of uranium oxide and is created during mining and initial processing of uranium ores. The substance is then further processed to create fuel rods for use in nuclear reactors.
