Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yellow is a popular colour, and seen by many people as bright and happy. Is it also considered a primary colour in the painting world?

Answer: Yes

The three primary colours for painters are red, yellow and blue. These are considered to be the three basic colours that other colors can be derived from.
2. Yellow appears in many song lyrics. What shade of yellow appears in the first line of the song "Mellow Yellow"?

Answer: Saffron

"Mellow Yellow" was first recorded by Scottish songwriter Donovan in 1966. Its first line is: "I'm just mad about saffron". The song, which has a psychedelic feel to it, has been theorized to be about smoking banana skins (among other strange themes).
3. Which biblical figure was said to have worn a yellow coat when performing an act of betrayal?

Answer: Judas

Judas was said to be wearing a yellow coat (or robe) when he betrayed Jesus with his infamous kiss. This may have been one of the reasons that yellow has become associated with cowardice in modern times.
4. In 1990, Crayola released a yellow crayon called "unmellow yellow".

Answer: True

As the name suggests, "unmellow yellow" is a very bright and almost fluorescent shade. Yellow was also one of the original Crayola colours when the company started up in 1903.

6. In what religion do adherents wear robes of a yellow shade, in honour of their founder?

Answer: Buddhism

Buddhist monks wear saffron robes in honour of Buddha, who considered it a holy colour. His followers have been wearing this shade since the 5th century, although nowadays there are a few variations depending on the particular group.
7. Which country's flag does NOT contain any shade of yellow?

Answer: Indonesia

8. What bright yellow spice, often found in Indian dishes, is part of the ginger family?

9. Which of the following characters from "The Simpsons" is not yellow?

Answer: Carl

10. Which Latin word, meaning 'gold', is the origin of the chemical symbol Au?

Answer: Aurum

The element gold is a reddish-yellow colour; the shade adapted with the same name is often depicted much brighter than the element appears in its natural form. Gold is a malleable metal and has a very high melting point of over 1000 degrees Celsius.
