Often just as relaxing as a white sand beach or a...sand coloured beach, I guess...black sand beaches are naturally created by volcanic influences; the black is actually hardened lava. We're very likely to find black sand beaches in Hawaii, so spending my vacation in the United States is a good bet.

Madagascar and Senegal are both pretty far from active volcanic activity, but visiting a location like Santorini in Greece will bring me closer to the warm, black sands that I'm looking for. In terms of 'Another Country', Iceland also contains a number of extensive black sand beaches because of its volcanic activity.

While the letter K is the first to appear in a number of capital cities, we're looking for another country in this case. To begin, Suriname's capital city, near the Atlantic Coast of South America, is Paramaribo. In Europe, Croatia's capital is actually the last alphabetically; I'd be visiting Zagreb. Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, hides away in the southeastern corner of the continent. If I'm looking for a 'K' capital, I should go to Kiev, Ukraine or Kingston, Jamaica. Perhaps I should climb up to Kathmandu, Nepal or go on safari in Kampala, Uganda instead! Ah well...regardless I'm going to another country.

None of these countries really come close to crossing 66° 33′ 44″ N, commonly regarded as the Arctic Circle. In North America, only the northern reaches of Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut cover it. In Europe, I could visit Greenland, a single island in Iceland, or the northern reaches of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Russia has the highest population north of the circle while in North America, Barrow, Alaska (the U.S.' northernmost town) is the most populous. On the reverse side of the world, the Antarctic Circle only contains Antarctica, so my choices are limited in the other direction.

Thailand's capital city, Bangkok, is actually named Krung Thep in Thai. This literally translates to 'City of Angels' and is thus the only location on my mind. Holding over nine million people within its boundaries, Bangkok is known for its Buddhist temples and landmarks (including Wat Pho and the Grand Temple) as well as its bustling cityscape. Canada's capital, Ottawa, is derived from the French word for 'to trade', Adàwer while Venezuela, whose capital is Caracas, was named Santiago de León de Caracas by Diego de Losada in the 16th century. Los Angeles is the only one with this literal translation; the name is Spanish for 'City of Angels'.

Turkey contains over a dozen volcanoes (mostly dormant) including its tallest peak, Mt. Ararat, which erupted in the 19th century. In Mexico, volcanoes, both active and dormant, pepper its Central Caribbean landscape including Popocatepetl which erupted in 2006 and Colima which has erupted dozens of times in recent centuries. Italy contains the famous Mt. Etna and Vesuvius.

I guess I could spend my vacation in Liechtenstein...while it's mountainous I know that nothing'll be spewing lava and nothing has been there for years.

If I'm heading out to Tortuguero National Park for my vacation, I'll be visiting a conservation area in the rainforests of beautiful Costa Rica. Nestled along the coast of the Caribbean Sea, if I stay here I'll be in one of the more remote locations in the country- no one can access the park unless they fly or float in. Tortuguero is home to a number of endangered and threatened local species calling the ecosystem their home in addition to scores of rare mammals including jaguars, monkeys, and sloths.

The UK's highest point, the peak of Ben Nevis reaches a maximum height of 1.3km above sea level, about 700m below our required height. Since I'm looking for a higher altitude, I won't be going to Scotland.

In Taiwan, Jade Mountain is the highest point reaching nearly four kilometers above the sea in the center of the island. Poland, meanwhile, contains Rysy in the High Tatras Mountains bordering Slovakia. This mountain tops off at 2.5km.
Cuba is actually the country closes to reaching 2,000m without going over- its highest point, Pico Turquino, hits 1,974m.

There are dozens of landlocked countries out there, so picking one isn't that big a problem. Paraguay and Bolivia are the only landlocked countries in South America while Uruguay is on the Atlantic Coast. Oman rests along the coast in the Middle East next to the Arabian Sea (and the Indian Ocean) while Cambodia rests on the Gulf of Thailand in the Indian Ocean.

If I'm looking for landlocked, I guess I can take my pick. Austria is blocked from the sea as is Switzerland. So are Hungary and the Czech Republic. In Africa I can find Chad and Zambia and in Asia I could go to Nepal and Afghanistan.

Answer: Tunisia

Tunisia is one of twelve countries in Northern Africa to contain a portion of the Sahara Desert, the world's largest desert. Tunisia also happens to contain the northern-most point in the continent on the Mediterranean Coast, Iles des Chiens. Ghana, while part of Western Africa, is part of the sub-Saharan region of the continent and does not contain the Sahara. Ras Hafun in Somalia marks the Easternmost point in Africa on the Indian Ocean and it also misses the Sahara.

Other countries in the Sahara include Egypt, Morocco, and Sudan (amongst others).

The only country in the world to begin with the letter Q is Qatar.
Qatar is located in the Middle East, so no matter which way you slice it, none of the listed countries are eligible to be my vacation spot. South Africa, obviously, is at the southernmost-tip of Africa. French Guyana is on the northern coast of South America and Greece, while the closest of all the choices, is on the Mediterranean Sea in Europe.
