Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Ottawa, the national capital, is located in Ontario on the Ottawa River, with the province of Quebec on the other side of the river. Formerly known as Bytown (after Colonel John By), the city was renamed in the 1850s, with a name derived from the native Algonquin language: "adawe" meaning "trade". Another feature of the city is the Rideau Canal, which is often claimed to be the "world's longest skating rink" when it freezes in the winter.
Of the three territorial capitals, Iqaluit, Nunavut, has a name derived from a native language, meaning "place of many fish". Located on Baffin Island, and formerly known as Frobisher Bay, Iqaluit is the smallest capital city in Canada, with a population under 10000 in 2021. It was made capital of the new territory when the Northwest Territories were split in 1999. Yellowknife, NWT is located on Great Slave Lake and has a name which is an anglicised version of the name of the local first nation. Whitehorse, Yukon was named for the White Horse Rapids in the Yukon River. Both Yellowknife and Whitehorse have gold mining in their history.
Victoria, British Columbia is located on Vancouver Island, while Edmonton, Alberta sits on the North Saskatchewan River. The former is named for the then Queen of England, whilst the latter gets its name from a town in England. Regina, Saskatchewan, also gets its name from the queen, "regina" being Latin for that word. Winnipeg, Manitoba and nearby Lake Winnipeg both derive their names from Ojibwe and Cree words meaning "muddy water".
Toronto, formerly known as York, sits on the shore of Lake Ontario and is a major city in every sense of the word. Ontario's provincial parliament sits at Queen's Park in Toronto. Picturesque Quebec City houses the legislature of la Belle Province, while New Brunswick is governed from Fredericton. Prince Edward Island's capital is Charlottetown, which was home to one of the conferences that led to Canadian confederation in the nineteenth century. Halifax, Nova Scotia and St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador are both port cities on the Atlantic Ocean.
The incorrect choices are all Canadian cities, some of them larger and more well-known than the capitals. I hope none of them fooled you.
