Answer: Saskatoon

Saskatoon and Regina together make up roughly 3/4 of the urban population of the province, the rest being made up by smaller centres like Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, and others. Saskatoon is another pleasant little city, on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. I had always thought that our most well known (and best!) wild prairie berry, the saskatoon, was named for the city, but it seems that it's the other way around - Saskatoon was apparently a good place to pick saskatoon berries, and that's where the name came from. It's originally a Cree word.

13. Which flower is featured on the flag of Saskatchewan?

From Quiz Canada: All about Saskatchewan

Answer: Western red lily

Scientifically known as "Lilium philadelphicum" the western red lily is native to North America. In 1968, the government of Saskatchewan announced they were holding a competition for the design of the Saskatchewan provincial flag. As a child, Anthony Drake and his family had emigrated to Ontario from Britain after World War II. Drake sent 13 designs in to the competition, one of which was picked. The yellow in the flag stands for the wheat fields of Saskatchewan, the green for the forests in the north of the province. Anthony Drake remained unaware his design had won while he was in Canada. He was sent to the U.K again as he became homesick for Britain, only learning that he won the competition once he had returned to the U.K.

19. What town is on the Saskatchewan-Alberta border?

From Quiz Saskatchewan!

Answer: Lloydminster

Saskatchewan has two border cities - Flin Flon is on the border with Manitoba. Lloydminster started as the Barr Colony, an imperial (and maybe just a wee bit racist) expedition to secure western Canadian settlement for the British. It was badly mismanaged, and Isaac Barr soon lost leadership to George Lloyd, for whom the city of Lloydminster ended up being named. Eventually the homesteaders prospered, and the colony was instrumental in opening up settlement in that part of the province.

21. There is a city in Saskatchewan known for its underground tunnels. The tunnels have become a large tourist attraction. Which city is this?

From Quiz Saskatchewan - More Than a Long Name!

Answer: Moose Jaw

The Tunnels of Moose Jaw attract thousands of tourists to the city each year. The tunnels were originally built for heating and maintenance, but they are said to have been used by Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s, trying to escape racial discrimination. The tunnels are also said to have been used by Al Capone in the 1920s and 1930s for bootlegging and as a hideout, when things got too dangerous in Chicago. There are two guided tours available through the tunnels. They are guided by actors and actresses, dressed in the theme of the time and they involve the audience in the tours. The first tour is "A Passage to Fortune" which tells the story of the Chinese immigrants and the second is "The Chicago Connection" which deals with Al Capone and the bootlegging industry.

Lake Athabasca is shared with Alberta, high in the northwest corner of the province. About 3/4 of the 7,850 km2 lake is in Saskatchewan. It drains into the Arctic Ocean via the Slave and Mackenzie Rivers. Reindeer Lake is in the northeast corner of Saskatchewan, and is shared with Manitoba. The vast majority of the 6,650 km2 lake is in Saskatchewan, with only 8% in Manitoba. It drains to Hudson Bay by way of the Reindeer and Churchill Rivers.

27. What is the largest, deepest and longest lake of Saskatchewan?

From Quiz Canada: All about Saskatchewan

Answer: Lake Athabasca

Lake Athabasca is tucked into the north-west corner of Saskatchewan. The lake also stretches into the north-east corner of neighbouring Canadian province, Alberta, in the province's Wood Buffalo municipality. 74% of Lake Athabasca is located in Saskatchewan, 26% of it lies in Alberta. The area of Lake Athabasca covers 3,030 square miles (7,850 square kilometres) and is around 175 miles (280 km) long. Uranium and gold mining on the north shore of Lake Athabasca established Uranium City, Saskatchewan.
