Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Royal headgear + male royalty = a town high in the Bradshaw Mountains

Answer: Crown King

Royal headgear = crown
Male royalty = king

The first claims in the Crown King area were gold claims made in 1875. The Crowned King Mine was one of the major mines in the area producing around $2,000,000 ($75,000,000 in 2025) in gold but the mines in the area never really produced as much as was needed to be profitable. Still from 1904 to 1926 a narrow-gauge railroad operated in the area to service the mines with Crown King being the terminus. Now, the dirt road to Crown King follows the railroad bed for much of its journey into the mountains.
2. Half a player's shirt + oxygen + myself = a town founded on Cleopatra Hill

Answer: Jerome

Player's shirt = Jersey
Half a player's shirt = Jer
Oxygen = O
Myself = me

Jerome traces its beginnings back to 1876 when the first copper claims were made in the area. Over the next 77 years about 33 million tons of copper, gold, silver, lead, and zinc ore were extracted from the mines worth an estimated $1 billion. Jerome has a large open pit mine as well as hundreds of miles of tunnels running under the town and the surrounding area. In its heyday Jerome was the third largest town in Arizona. By the 1950s it had become a ghost town. Then in the 1960s hippies and artists revived the town, which has since become a major tourist attraction.
3. Burial chamber + rock = a town founded on Goose Flats

Answer: Tombstone

Burial chamber = tomb
Rock = stone

Tombstone was founded in 1879 to service the Goodenough Mine. It became a boom town based on the silver mines in the area. During the first four years of operation, the mines in the area produced a low estimate of $25 million (approximately $844 million today). Some estimates of the silver produced went as high as $2.97 billion in today's dollar.

Tombstone was the quintessential boom town, sprouting from nothing into a thriving community in a matter of a couple of years. Founded in 1879, by 1881 it had four churches, fancy restaurants, a bowling alley, ice house, school, opera house, two banks, 110 saloons, and 14 gambling halls. It is most notorious for the Gunfight at the OK Corral between the Earps and the Cowboys.
4. Iron + temporary bed = a former territorial capital

Answer: Prescott

Iron = press
Temporary bed = cot

Gold was first discovered in the Prescott area in 1862 and 1863. Gold, silver, lead, and copper mines played a major role in the development of the area and the founding of Prescott. Some of the more famous mines were the Poland, McCabe, Silver Bell, Little Jessie, Big Bug, Blue Bell, Iron Queen, and Iron King. The Iron King was the last major mine to operate in the area and closed operations in 1969.

Prescott played a major role in the Indian Wars and as the territorial capital during several different stints.
5. Orb = the county seat of Gila County

Answer: Globe

Orb is a synonym of globe.

In 1875, silver was discovered on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation and by 1876 plans to incorporate nearby Globe were put in motion. By 1881 Globe had become the county seat of Gila County.

But it was not silver that drove mining in Globe. It was copper. In 1880 the Old Dominion Mining Company was incorporated. By 1904 Phelps-Dodge acquired the mine. During its heyday, the mine produced 800 million pounds of copper. By 1931 the mine closed permanently.
6. Terrific + optical organ + either = a town originally named Queen

Answer: Superior

Terrific = super
optical organ = eye = I
Either = or

Superior came into existence to service the Silver King and Silver Queen Mines in the late 1870s. It was originally called Queen, then Hastings. By 1902 its name changed to Superior. By 1893 the Silver Queen had shut down and by 1896 the Silver King.

Although the mining in the area started out exploiting native silver, it soon turned to copper. By 1914 the Magma Copper Company had come into existence. The Magma Mine operated for 71 years until it shut down in 1982. Magma produced 1,300,000 short tons of copper, 36,550 short tons of zinc, 686,000 ounces of gold, and 34.3 million ounces of silver. In the 2020s, the Resolution Copper deposit is being explored for future exploitation.

The Congress Mine became the deepest mine in the Arizona territory reaching a depth of 3200 ft. It produced over $600 million dollars worth of gold in 2025 dollars. The mine closed by the early 1910s.
9. Queen's mate + bloke = the county seat of Mohave County

Answer: Kingman

The Kingman Turquoise Mine has been in operation since the 1880s. It is one of the most important turquoise mines in Arizona. Native American civilizations mined turquoise in the area for millennia well before European settlement of North America.
