Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Israel

Answer: Mid-South Pacific

Though opposite the South Pacific, one cannot hear in Israel "Some Enchanted Evening" emanating from the musical "South Pacific".

Israel - 30° 48' 44.7" N, 34° 51' 34.1" E
Mid-south Pacific - 30° 48' 44.7" S, 144° 46' 27.3" W
2. Auckland, New Zealand

Answer: Seville, Spain

The "Barber of Seville" did not, as far as I know, open up a branch in Auckland, New Zealand - even though they were only about 7900 miles (about 12800 km) away if drilling directly through the core of the Earth.

Auckland - 36° 51' 7.5" S, 174° 45' 47.4" E
Seville - 36° 51' 7.5" N, 5° 14' 12.6" W
3. London, England

Answer: Pacific Ocean, south of New Zealand

This area is the South Pacific Ocean. Though it is close to where the Pacific and Indian Oceans meet - not like there's a sign there - is by Australia so New Zealand is clearly in the Pacific.

London - 51° 30' 26.4" N, 0° 7' 39.5" W
Pacific, south of New Zealand - 51° 30' 26.4" S, 179° 52' 20.5" E
4. Lima, Peru

Answer: Bangkok, Thailand

Although Bangkok has a network of canals, they don't leak through to Lima on the other side of the world.

Lima - 12° 3' 43.6" S, 77° 2' 11.5" W
Bangkok - 12° 3' 43.6" N, 102° 57' 48.5" E
5. New York City

Answer: East Indian Ocean

And if you're on top of the Empire State Building, the distance to the surface of the East Indian Ocean would be 7900 miles and 1454 feet (443 m) including the antenna.

New York - 40° 42' 45.8" N, 74° 0' 21.7" W
East Indian Ocean - 40° 42' 45.8" S, 106° 2' 54.8" E
6. Quito, Ecuador

Answer: Sumatra

Ecuador is so named because it sits on the equator, so anything on the opposite side would also have to be on the equator. Sumatra is, in fact, on the equator on the other side of the world in Indonesia.
Notice the 0 degrees of both locations.

Quito - 0° 13' 12.6" S, 78° 30' 44.4" W
Sumatra - 0° 13' 12.6" N, 101° 29' 15.6" E
7. Paraguay

Answer: Just outside of Taiwan's territorial waters

Paraguay is one of the few landlocked countries in South America.

Paraguay - 23° 18' 59.7" S, 58° 10' 9.6" W
Pacific near Taiwan - 23° 18' 59.7" N, 121° 49' 50.4" E
8. Falkland Islands

Answer: Northeast China

A contested island led to a short undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom in 1982.
The military conflict had been building up to tensions for months and was settled in the UK's favor after about ten weeks.

Falkland Island - 51° 47' 46.7" S, 58° 35' 43.9" W
Northeast China - 51° 47' 46.7" N, 121° 24' 16.1" E
9. Los Angeles

Answer: Indian Ocean, East of Madagascar

Maybe you'll see the lion, hippo, giraffe and zebra on their way to Madagascar even though they left from New York.

Los Angeles - 34° 3' 13.3" N, 118° 14' 34" W
Indian Ocean near Madagascar - 34° 3' 13.3" S, 61° 45' 26" E
10. Beijing

Answer: Central Argentina

Not really anything to speak of in that area of Central Argentina...but at least it's on dry land.

Beijing - 39° 54' 22.4" N, 116° 23' 28.6" E
Argentina - 39° 54' 22.4" S, 63° 36' 31.4" W
