quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The archipelago known as the Inner Hebrides, Scotland, is made up of Islay, Jura, Mull, Rum, and which other well-known island?

Answer: Skye

Largest and northernmost of the group, the Isle of Skye has featured in several major films, including Flash Gordon (1980), and Prometheus (2012).

Skye is also home to Dunvegan Castle, Scotland's oldest inhabited castle, which dates from the 12th century.
2. There are several "skybridge" structures around the world, but perhaps the most famous spans which twin skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia?

Answer: The Petronas Towers

The Petronas Towers held the title of world's tallest buildings from 1998-2004.

A double-decker skybridge links the two buildings on the 41st and 42nd floors, having been designed to "float" between the towers to compensate for high winds which cause them to sway several feet.

The other choices are all twin skyscrapers, but none boast a skybridge, and none are in Malaysia.
3. The State of Texas has a reputation for all things large, however, it is *NOT* the "Big Sky State." Which Western state with its capital of Helena, carries that nickname?

Answer: Montana

Montana is also known as "The Treasure State," and has slogans including "Land of the Shining Mountains" and "The Last Best Place." Quite something to live up to!

Big Sky is, in fact, a census-designated community straddling Gallatin and Madison counties. It is home to a namesake ski resort, as well as the Moonlight Basin Ski Resort, together boasting "The Biggest Skiing in America" - something else to live up to!
4. In 2009, German Thomas Dold set an amazing record of 4 minutes 53 seconds in running up what was, at the time, the tallest freestanding man-made structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Which city is home to the 328 metre (1,076ft) Sky Tower?

Answer: Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland's Sky Tower is claimed to be strong enough to withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake occurring within 20km (12.4 miles), and to remain undamaged in winds up to 200kmh (125mph).

Q1 on the Gold Coast is 323m (1058ft), while the Sydney Tower stands 309m (1014ft). A fuel plant in Secunda, South Africa boasts Africa's tallest freestanding man-made structure at 301m (988ft), but as it's a chimney, running up it would be a little difficult.
5. There are numerous songs with "sky" in the title. "Amarillo Sky," originally recorded by McBride and the Ride (2002), refers to a city in which of the United States?

Answer: Amarillo, Texas

"Amarillo" is the Spanish word for "yellow." Apart from its namesake city, the lyrics of "Amarillo Sky" relate to the dusty, sun-drenched skies of severe drought conditions often experienced in the Texas panhandle.
6. "The Sky Mountain," also known as "The Heaven Mountain" and "Himmelbjerget" by the locals, is found in which country? Those locals might fly their national flag here, the only Scandinavian flag *NOT* to feature blue.

Answer: Denmark

Whether Himmelbjerget is actually Denmark's highest point is in dispute. Several locations in the same area stake that claim, and all peak at around 170m.

What is not in dispute is the fact that - whichever it is - Denmark's HIGHEST high point is Europe's LOWEST high point, excluding Monaco and the Vatican.
7. By latitude, Sky Valley is the northernmost city in the state of Georgia, USA. As such, it sits on Georgia's border with which other state?

Answer: North Carolina

Georgia's northern border is shared almost equally between Tennessee and North Carolina. Sky Valley is nearer to the eastern end of that border, nestled at the foot of Rabun Bald, Georgia's second highest peak.
8. "Aoraki," which can be translated as "sky/cloud piercer," is the highest peak in New Zealand. From 1851 to 1998 it was more commonly known by what other name?

Answer: Mt Cook

The mountain was named Mt Cook in 1851 in honour of Capt James Cook. This was officially changed in 1998 to Aoraki/Mt Cook to reflect its historic Maori name.

Mt Cook reaches 3,754m (12,316ft), and is found in the Southern Alps. It actually consists of three summits, creatively named the Low Peak, Middle Peak and High Peak. No prizes for guessing which is the most prominent!
9. Sky Lakes Wilderness, Oregon USA, is a 116,000 acre (47,000ha) area renowned for what environmental "positive?"

Answer: The purity of its water

Sky Lakes Wilderness was established in 1984. According to wilderness.net, several of its lakes reportedly have among the most chemically pure water known of all lakes on the globe.
10. "Sky burial" sounds a little unusual. In which mountainous, predominantly Buddhist region is it practised?

Answer: Tibet

Sky burial involves placing the cadaver on a mountaintop, exposed to the elements, where it decomposes or is "dispensed with" by birds and animals.

Tibet's rocky terrain and lack of fuel make conventional disposal of human remains difficult, and the Buddhist belief in reincarnation/rebirth deems preservation of a body unnecessary.
