2. We spend every winter in Benidorm, Spain, because it is a lot warmer than the UK. Benidorm has two of the largest and cleanest beaches in Europe, called Playa de Levante and Playa de Poniente. These translate as East Beach and West Beach in Spanish, but how do the British refer to these beaches?

Answer: Sunrise and Sunset

The Playa de Levante is known as East or Sunrise Beach, and Playa de Poniente is known as West or Sunset Beach.

The Benidorm skyline is very similar to the New York skyline with 140 plus buildings of 20 floors or more. The highest is 54 floors high (Hotel Gran Bali). If you fancy a beer, there are over 800 bars to try.

Question by pmarney.
3. One of the places that I'd like to vacation is the Aran Islands on the west coast of Ireland. Irish Gaelic is the primary language, and I'm hoping for a bed and breakfast place with no phone. Which of these islands is NOT part of the Aran Islands?

Answer: Inchydoney

Access is available to the islands by passenger ferry or air. The population is small, but the islands contain some of Ireland's oldest archaeological remains. With my easel, brushes and paints, I'd attempt to capture the essence of this rugged landscape.

4. My favorite vacation spot is two hours from my home. It consists of beautiful red rocks, and a canyon with a stream. Which of these spots attracts people from all over the world who believe in crystals and the power of a vortex?

Answer: Sedona, Arizona

Sedona is known for its beautiful red rock formations that create some of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen. One of its most famous residents was the actress Jane Russell.

5. I grew up in this internationally-flavored US city. People who flock there in the winter are called snowbirds. What is the name of this southern city famously known for art deco buildings, beautiful beaches and Joe's Stone Crabs?

Answer: Miami Beach

In the late 1800s the area known now as Miami Beach, Florida was mainly mangrove swamps. A number of visionaries tried to develop the land to farm coconuts, avocados and the like. Eventually three key men formed a coalition to develop the land for residential and tourist purposes. In 1917, Miami Beach was established as a city (for two years prior they were the Town of Miami Beach). The climate, night clubs, hotels, beaches, and, for a long time, the proximity to Cuba were major reasons for the popularity and growth of this tropical paradise.

The international flavor of this city makes it even more appealing to tourists and residents alike.

6. My favorite vacation spot can be a real thriller at times. Where else can you see a jumbo jet fly past you on the beach? When planes take off, spectators here love to stand by the fence to feel the blast of the engines. What is the name of this Caribbean beach?

Answer: Maho Beach

Maho Beach is located on the island of St. Maarten. St. Maarten is a popular tourist destination for Europeans as well as Americans. Princess Juliana International Airport serves the island and draws several large jets such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus 340. The airport's short runway is a tight fit for these jumbos and as a result the jumbos have to touchdown at the very edge of the runway to land safely. This results in low approaches to the runway and airplanes fly low enough on the beach that spectators feel a thrill as the jet soars past them. Maho Beach sits just beyond the runway fence, separated only by a two-lane roadway. On takeoff as the large jets build up power, people stand by the fence to ride the blast, which sometimes will drive beach goers into the water.

7. One of my greatest vacations was a trip to England. While there, I was able to visit several groups of standing stones. In what English county will you find Men-An-Tol, The Hurlers, the Merry Maidens and The Pipers?

Answer: Cornwall

I've always found standing stones fascinating. While Stonehenge, in Wiltshire, is the best-known --and is amazing!-- there are standing stones all over Great Britain in a variety of sizes and configurations.

Of the groups I mentioned, The Hurlers, The Merry Maidens and The Pipers, are reputed by folklore to be people turned to stones as punishment for not respecting the Sabbath--by hurling, dancing and piping, respectively. The Hurlers consists of three stone circles, ranging in diameter from 108 to 140 feet, dating from around 1500 B.C. The Merry Maidens are 19 stones in a perfect circle, and are among a very few groups thought to have survived the passage of time in their entirety. The Pipers are two tall stones a few hundred yards away, said to be the musicians who tempted the maidens from their trip to church with their playing.

The Men-An-Tol is an upright circular stone flanked by two upright stones, thought to be an early astronomical observatory.

8. My dream vacation spot raises many people's eyebrows. With so many more popular and seemingly more exciting places to choose from, why would anyone go here? But when you're as crazy about Trappist and lambic beers, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and moules frites as I am, maybe this destination makes more sense. Where am I headed as soon as I can scrape up the Euros?

Answer: Belgium

I admit it--it's mostly for the beer! Belgian's historic beers include small-batch brews hand-crafted in isolated monasteries, lambics made only with naturally occurring wild yeasts, and fruity sours that pack a deceptive punch. But the works of Pieter Breugel, depicting Flemish peasant life in the 17th century, are a tempting prospect too. And who could say no to a hearty plate of steamed mussels with fried potatoes, dolloped with savory aioli? (Well, my husband could--but that's just more for me.)

Question by Quizissippi.
9. My preference is to hike Mount Charleston, but there are other attractions here as well. What US city is better known for its wedding chapels and Elvis impersonators?

Answer: Las Vegas

I find the desert wilderness much more interesting than the gambling and show. Aside from Mount Charleston, Lake Mead and the Grand Canyon are within a few hours drive.

10. We have a second home in France, and like to drive down to this town, situated on the Mediterranean coast. It is the capital of the Alpes Maritime department, and is one of the oldest settlements in Europe. After Paris, it is the most popular destination in France. Where might we be headed?

Answer: Nice

For many years, Nice belonged to Italy, but became French territory in 1860. With a mild Mediterranean climate, combined with spectacular scenery, Nice is a wonderful place to visit. With superb cuisine, various museums, markets etc., Nice has something to suit almost anyone.
