Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I cover a large area of the ocean floor. I am among the flattest places on Earth. I am covered with the lava from undersea volcanic eruptions. I am usually found more than 10, 000 feet below the surface. What am I?

Answer: the Abyssal plain

The Abyssal plain is the largest habitat on Earth. Because of its tremendous depth, the Abyssal plain does not support a large variety of aquatic life, but scientists have discovered thousands of bacteria, and invertebrate species.
2. What is the name of the city which houses over 1500 Hindu temples and other religious buildings, is one of the oldest cities in its country, is called by Hindus the "City of Light", and is located on the river Ganges?

Answer: Benares

Benares, also known as Banaras and Varanasi, is located in northern India. Benares is a sacred city to Hindus. Many come to Benares to die with the hope of obtaining salvation. This association with death has caused city officials to install an electric crematorium to reduce the air pollution from the traditional wood-burning funeral pyres.
3. What is the name of a large city in Europe that hosted its country's first World's Fair in 1888 and the 1992 Summer Olympics, and is also the capital of an autonomous region in its country?

Answer: Barcelona

Like many other cities in Europe, Barcelona has a long history, and the Romans were significant to its early development. Today, the outline of the Roman Forum can still be seen in the center of the city, and parts of the city walls built by the Romans also remain.
A large district known as Eixample not only transformed the old city but remains a major element of the modern city today. It is characterized by its geometrically formed grid crossed by wide avenues.
4. What is the name of a region that for centuries served as a bridge between Europe and Asia and was the site of the first great empire?

Answer: Anatolian Plateau

The capital of the Republic of Turkey was moved to Ankara, on the Anatolian Plateau, in 1923 because of its central location and to distinguish it from the imperial capital of Istanbul. The plateau was the site of the Hittite civilization in the 15th century B.C.E.
5. What term refers to the life zone of Earth that includes the air, land, water, and all organisms including humans?

Answer: biosphere

The presence of the biosphere distinguishes our planet from all others in the solar system. Environmentally the Earth is divided into four spheres; the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, lithosphere, and the biosphere. The complex functions within each sphere interact with the functions of the other spheres.
6. What is the name of one island that contains all or parts of three different countries?

Answer: Borneo

Borneo is the largest island of the Malay archipelago and the third-largest island in the world. It is also one of the least explored places on Earth. Borneo is divided among three countries: 72 percent of the island is a province of Indonesia. The rest forms the two eastern provinces of Malaysia, plus the small country of Brunei.
7. What central Asian sea is more than twice as salty as the ocean and has shrunk to nearly 1/3 of its original size?

Answer: Aral Sea

The Aral Sea's two water sources, the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, were tapped by the former Soviet government in the 1960s to irrigate the region's desert plain for the purpose of growing cotton. The result was an annual loss of water and an increase in salinity, which also resulted in a loss of a significant number of fish species and other wildlife.
Attempts are currently being made to rehabilitate the Aral Sea by the governments of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
8. What is the most politically isolated, least developed country in Europe? Much of the country's income comes from its citizens working abroad.

Answer: Albania

After gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, Albania went from a republic to a monarchy and back to a republic before submitting entirely to the strict socialist regime led for four decades by Enver Hoxha. During this period, Albania's economy was 100 percent nationalized (even personal cars were owned by the state), and diplomatic ties were cut with all of its former allies, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, and finally, even China, leaving Hoxha's regime completely isolated.

In 1997 Albania experienced a civil war, which eventually produced the present-day republic.
9. The aurora borealis, aka northern lights, can be seen in regions close to the Earth's northern magnetic pole. Does a similar phenomenon occur at the Earth's southern magnetic pole?

Answer: Yes

Yes, Aurora australis. Simply put, auroras are the result of particles contained in solar wind interacting with then Earth's geomagnetic layer. The colors are created by the amount and nature of the particles, i.e. oxygen particles would create green or red colors.
10. What is the largest bay (measured by area) in the world?

Answer: Bay of Bengal

A bay is broad inlet of the sea where the land curves inward. The Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean is the world's largest, followed by the Hudson Bay. Australia has some of the world's most beautiful bays, as do some islands in the Caribbean.
