Answer: Iowa

Lewis and Clark scouted this area in northwest Iowa, at the head of the Missouri River, in 1804. It became a major transportation hub.

Fun fact: its flourishing alcoholic beverage business during Prohibition earned it the nickname "Little Chicago".
2. Traverse City, known for its cherry orchards

Answer: Michigan

Originally the summer home of Odawa bands of the Anishanaabe Native American tribe, this city on a bay in Lake Michigan is home to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Its many cherry orchards led to its designation of Cherry Capital of the World.
3. Atlantic City, known for its casinos

Answer: New Jersey

All the options listed have Atlantic coastlines, but the city with the casinos is in New Jersey. This seaside resort was once the summer home of the Lenape Native American tribe. It is now a profitable east coast gambling mecca.
4. Calumet City, pipe smoking

Answer: Illinois

Calumet comes from the M'kmaq and French word for a pipe used by Native Americans in peace and war ceremonies. The city lies on the west side of the Illinois-Indiana border.

During the pre-Columbian era, this area on the Missouri River was settled by an ancient people known as mound builders. The Osage Native American tribe would later occupy the area. Daniel Boone laid out the town in 1822. It was named for Thomas Jefferson, third president of the US.
6. Bossier City, King Cotton

Answer: Louisiana

Pronounced "BOWzhur" not BOSSy er", this settlement on the eastern bank of the Red River was originally the plantation Elysian Grove, established by James Cane. It developed into a cotton-exporting river port that is now a casino tourist town.
7. Kansas City, home of the Negro Leagues Museum

Answer: Missouri

In 1803, Lewis and Clark scouted this area at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, intending to build a fort here. Originally home to the Kansa, Sage, Otoe, and Missouri tribes of Native Americans, Joseph Smith established a Mormon settlement here in 1831.

In addition to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the National World War I Museum is also located in Kansas City.
8. Salt Lake City, a state capital

Answer: Utah

This area was originally inhabited by Shoshone, Weber Ute, and Paiute Native American tribes. Brigham Young established a Mormon enclave here in 1847, and the city is now known as the World Capital of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Fun fact: water in the south arm of the Great Salt Lake that gives the city its name is 3-5 times saltier than the ocean.
9. Johnson City, Rucker's "Wagon Wheel"

Answer: Tennessee

This Johnson City was initially founded as a railroad station named Johnson's Depot. It developed into a major rail hub for the Southeast.

Darius Rucker gave a shout-out to Johnson City in the song "Wagon Wheel", written by Bob Dylan and Ketch Secor.

Mountain Dew has its origin here, as Pepsi developed and marketed a soft drink known as Mountain Dew Johnson City Gold.
10. Garden City, founded by the Fulton Brothers

Answer: Kansas

While New Jersey's nickname is the Garden State, Kansas has the town named Garden City. This town on the north side of the Arkansas River in the High Plains of southwest Kansas began as several buildings constructed by the Fulton brothers who settled there. They urged hunter Charles "Buffalo" Jones to convince the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad to establish a switch station here which brought growth to the town. It acquired the name Garden City from Mrs. William Fulton's garden.

Kansas is a garden of beautiful golden wheat fields.
11. Silver City, Billy the Kid hangout

Answer: New Mexico

Nevada is known as the Silver State, but Silver City is located in southwest New Mexico. The area around Silver City was home to the prehistoric Mimbres Mogollon tribe of Native Americans. The Apache tribe lived in the area in the 1600s, and Spanish explorers began copper mining there. When silver was discovered in 1881, it became a tent city for miners that developed into a settled town named Silver City.

Fun fact: Sheriff Harvey Whitehill was the first lawman to arrest Billy the Kid here in 1875.
12. Coal City, "black" gold

Answer: Illinois

All the states listed are known for coal mines, but Coal City is a town in Illinois. In 1820, Canadian trader Peter Lansett discovered coal in the area, and coal miners comprised the settlers of the town named for the growing industry.

Fun fact: The movie "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" was partially filmed in Coal City.
13. Rapid City, home to a presidential monument and Ellsworth Air Force Base

Answer: South Dakota

Rapid City lies east of the Black Hills, an area sacred to the Lakota tribe. Named after Rapid Creek, unsuccessful gold miners established the town as the "gateway to the Black Hills," hoping to attract a flood of prospectors to settle there.

Nearby Mt Rushmore is a massive stone-carved tribute to Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Ellsworth Air Force Base grew from an Army Air Corps base established in the 1940s.
14. Pearl City, on the harbor

Answer: Hawaii

Pearl City began as rice paddies on the north shore of Pearl Harbor. In 1844, English missionaries named the prospective town after British Admiral George Anson's pearl fleet. Today Pearl City is an unincorporated village.
15. Caņon City, Royal "Gorge-ous"

Answer: Colorado

Caņon City was laid out in 1858 on the north side of the Arkansas River. The town grew during the Pike's Peak gold rush of 1858-1861.

Today it is famous for the bridge over the Royal Gorge. It's scary enough driving across the bridge, yet some daredevils actually bungee-jump from it.
