From Quiz

Answer: Texas

Texas is a state in the South Central region of the United States. Texas is nicknamed the "Lone Star State" for its former status as an independent republic. Texas gets its name from the Caddo word táysha, which means "friends." Austin is the state capital. The total area of Texas is 695,662 km2 (268,596 sq mi). Texas became a state on December 29, 1845.

2. Which city has, at various times, depended upon its port for a major part of its economic vitality?

From Quiz Which Portland: Maine or Oregon?

Answer: Both

From the late 18th Century, the village of Portland, Maine, depended upon its harbour for both fishing and trade. Portland is the largest port in Maine. At one time, it was a principal ice-free harbour in winter for Canadian exports. Portland, Oregon, benefits from the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers which give it access to the Pacific Ocean. Portland was the principal port in the Pacific Northwest until 1890 when the railroad connected Seattle's deep-water port with the rest of the United States.

The play is not only historical but was also intended by the author as an allegory to the campaign of U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House of Representatives Committee on Un-American Activities. Miller was questioned by HUAC and convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to disclose who had attended meetings with him.

4. Which city was named after Captain George Vancouver?

Las Cruces was founded in 1849. Unlike many major cities, it has no clearly defined downtown business district. This is largely due to the fact that in the 1960s, much of the older parts of the city were razed in an effort to modernize the downtown area, with the end result being practically NO downtown at all! In February 2013, the mayor announced plans for a huge 700 acre city park, which would be nearly as large as New York's Central Park.
