Antananarivo is the capital of Madagascar, an island country in the Indian Ocean, on the East African Coast. The city is located almost in the center of the island and is 90 miles (144 km) from the eastern coast of the Indian Ocean and 130 miles (210 km) southwest of Toamasina, the island's chief port.

Banjul (until 1973 known as Bathurst) is the capital of the Republic of the Gambia, the smallest country on the African continent. It is located on Banjul Island (or St. Mary's Island) on the Gambia River estuary to the Atlantic Ocean.

Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is the largest city in the country and on the African continent. It is home to the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and also to the largest ancient world statue, the Great Sphinx. Cairo lies on the east bank of the River Nile.

Gitega has been the political capital of Burundi since 2018. It is located in the center of the country. The former capital was Bujumbura, that is the country's most populous city located on the shore of Lake Tanganyika.

Harare, formerly Salisbury, the capital of Zimbabwe, is a modern and well-planned city. It lies at an elevation of 4,865 feet (1,483 meters) and is a hub of rail, road and air transport. Harare is the national center of business, banking, and industry.

Since 1975, Lilongwe is the capital and most populated city of Malawi. It is located in the central region of the country, near the border with Zambia and Mozambique, and is named after the Lilongwe River.

Luanda is the capital and largest city in Angola. It is located on the Atlantic coast, being the main seaport, and the industrial and cultural center of the country. Luanda is the third city in the world with the highest number of Portuguese-speaking people, after Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya, situated in the highlands at an elevation of about 5,500 feet (1,680 meters), in the south-central part of the country. It is the main industrial and financial center of Kenya. Tourism plays an important role in the city's economy. Thousands of tourists visit the Nairobi National Park, which lies just outside the city.

Praia is the capital and largest city of Cape Verde, an archipelago and island country in the central Atlantic Ocean. Praia is on the coast of Santiago Island. Praia is the economic, political, and cultural center of Cape Verde.

Tripoli has been the capital of Libya since its independence in 1951. It is situated in northwestern Libya, along the Mediterranean coast. It is the largest city and the chief seaport of the country. The city of Tripoli was originally named Oea, having been founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BCE.

Port Louis is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Mauritius, an island country in the Indian Ocean. It is the home to the nation's main harbor. Charles Darwin visited the city in 1836. On this occasion, he climbed the Le Pounce mountain, from where he had a great view over Port Louis.

Yaounde is the capital city of Cameroon. Much of its economy is centered on the administrative, services, and commercial sectors. Yaounde lies in the south-central part of the country, on a hilly plateau between the Nyong and Sanaga rivers.
