Cologne is a major city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city was founded in the 1st Century CE and given the name Colonia Agrippina by the Romans from which the modern day name of Cologne is derived. In the German language the city is called Köln.

7. Frankfurt am Main
Frankfurt am Main is a major German city located on the river Main, a tributary of the Rhine. The designator 'am Main' is used to distinguish it from the smaller city of Frankfurt an der Oder which lies in the eastern part of Germany in the state of Brandenburg.
Although Frankfurt am Main was historically a city state it lost this status in 1866 and since 1945 has been located in the state of Hesse. Frankfurt is known for being a significant financial centre and the airport is one of the country's busiest and a major hub for the national airline Lufthansa.

Bremen is the capital of the small German state of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen which contains the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. The city is located in the northern part of the country and lies on the River Weser. Bremen City Hall and the nearby statue the Bremen Roland are designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hannover is the capital of the state of Lower Saxony. The city name used to be written in English as Hanover with one n but the German spelling with two ns has now become more popular. The origin of the name is uncertain but it is suggested it may be from the German phrase hohen Ufer which translates literally as 'on the high bank' referring to the city's location at the meeting of the River Leine and the River Ihme.
10. Nuremberg
Nuremberg is a city in the German state of Bavaria. The city lies on the River Pegnitz which, after joining the Regnitz and the Main flows into the River Rhine. The city was originally the site of a castle and first appears in documentation in the 1050s.
The city grew substantially throughout the medieval period. Following the Second World War the city was the site of the Nuremberg trials which saw Nazi officials tried for war crimes.
