1. Tokyo
Tokyo is the capital city of Japan and is located in the Kanto region on the island of Honshu. Tokyo was originally called Edo and was a small fishing village. The settlement grew in size and became the capital of Japan in 1868 following the Meiji Restoration. It was at this point that the city became known as Tokyo which literally means Eastern Capital.
2. Fukushima
Fukushima is the capital of the Fukushima Prefecture and lies about 250km north of Tokyo. The city is built around Mt Shinobu, a 275m high mountain. The name Fukushima is familiar to many as the site of a nuclear power station disaster which happened as a result of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011; however the power station was located in the city of Okuma elsewhere in Fukushima prefecture rather than the city of Fukushima itself.
3. Nagoya
Nagoya is the capital of the Aichi Prefecture and is located in central Honshu. The city has traditionally been a major industrial hub and is home to Japan's largest seaport. Due to its industry the city saw heavy bombing during World War II.
4. Yokohama
Yokohama is located in the Greater Tokyo Area, however is a city in its own right. The city is located on Tokyo Bay and is the capital of the Kanagawa Prefecture. Yokohama was originally a small fishing village but it grew quickly after the Port of Yokohama was opened to foreign trade in 1859. The port is still one of the major ports of Japan.
5. Sapporo
Sapporo is located on the island of Hokkaido and is the largest city on the island. It is the capital city of the Hokkaido prefecture and is situated in the southwest of the island. Sapporo became the first city in Asia to host the Winter Olympic Games when it did so in 1972. The Sapporo snow festival has been held annually since 1950 featuring sculptures made from ice and snow.
6. Kyoto
Kyoto is a historic city in Japan having been founded as the seat of the court of imperial Japan in 794. The city served as the capital of imperial Japan for many years until the capital was switched to Tokyo in 1869. The city still contains many historic buildings and important religious sites. The video game company Nintendo have their headquarters in Kyoto.
7. Osaka
Osaka is the capital of the Osaka Prefecture and is located on the island of Honshu. The settlement was originally called Naniwa and exactly when the name changed is unknown but there is evidence of the name Osaka being used from 1496. The city has been home to the National Bunraku Theatre since 1984 which showcases performances of traditional bunraku puppetry.
8. Nagasaki
Nagasaki is located on the island of Kyushu. The city was established by the Portuguese in the 16th century as a port to allow trade with Japan. The city became a key industrial city and was an important base for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Nagasaki was the second city after Hiroshima to be attacked with nuclear weapons when the US dropped the 'Fat Man' bomb on the city in August 1945. Following the war the city was rebuilt.
9. Hiroshima
Hiroshima is the capital city of the Hiroshima Prefecture and is located in the south of the island of Honshu. Hiroshima was founded around Hiroshima Castle in the late 16th century and remained relatively small until it underwent a period of major urbanisation and industrialisation following the Meiji Restoration. Hiroshima gained city status in 1889 and became an important city for the Japanese military.
The city became the first in the world to be attacked with a nuclear bomb when the US dropped an atomic bomb on the city on 6th August 1945 destroying most of the city and killing thousands of its residents. The city was rebuilt after the war and contains the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park containing the Genbaku Dome of the former Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall which was the only building left standing after the attack.
10. Kochi
Kochi is the capital city of the prefecture of the same name and is located on the island of Shikoku. The city is known as the home of a dish called katsuo no tataki which consists of seasoned, sliced and lightly seared bonito fish (also known as skipjack tuna).
