Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Council areas come and go but historic counties are far more firmly lodged in British culture (not least in county cricket). Yorkshire is the largest of all the historic counties and is famous for its beautiful countryside that includes the Dales (setting of the ITV soap 'Emmerdale') and the Peak District. Nestled in amongst some of the finest rural beauty that England has to offer are a number of diverse towns and cities that are home to an eclectic array of accents.

The settlements in Yorkshire are known for the following:

Sheffield - steel and long time home of the World Snooker Championship
York - Viking history and the fantastic National Railway Museum
Halifax - wool manufacturing, toffee and its banking institution namesake
Ripon - small historic city with an impressive cathedral
Rotherham - industrial town (coal and steel)
Redcar - Teeside's famous pier and Beacon
Wakefield - site of a battle during the War of the Roses
Leeds - famous football (soccer) team that play at Elland Road
Bradford - multicultural city once known as the "wool capital of the world"
Castleford - Roman ruins and home to the Tigers rugby league team
Doncaster - horse racing
Barnsley - coal mining and glassmaking

Of the incorrect answers, two are in Wales (Neath and Cardiff) with Swindon (Wiltshire), Didcot (Oxfordshire) and Reading (Berkshire) spread out along the Great Western Main Line to London. Lostwithiel is in the fine county of Cornwall in the southwest of England; Birkenhead can be found across the Mersey from Liverpool and the famous ballroom dancing town of Blackpool is situated on the Lancashire coast.
