Most of the Asian countries gained independence after WWII. The largest British colony, India gained independence in 1947. In the same year, Pakistan (East and West) gained independence. East Pakistan later re-named Bangladesh in 1971. Sri Lanka formerly known as Ceylon was independent in 1948. In 1965, Maldives was independent.

In South-East Asia, Myanmar (Burma) was de-colonized in 1948. In 1957, Malaya gained independence. In 1963, Malaya along with Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore formed the Federation of Malaysia. Singapore later separated from Malaysia in 1965 due to political and racial issues. Brunei was the last nation in South-East Asia to declare independence in 1984.

In the Middle East, Iraq was the first to achieve independence in 1932, Jordan in 1946, Kuwait in 1961, Oman in 1970, Bahrain, Qatar and UAE in 1971.

The British seized Aden 1839 and southern Yemen was a strategic British colony for 129 years. Aden Colony in southern Yemen was a Crown Colony from 1937 to 1963. North and South Yemen was unified in 1990. North Yemen was formerly known as Yemen Arab Republic.

In 1842, Britain gained Hong Kong under the Treaty of Nanjing after the first Opium War ended. In July 1 1997, Hong Kong was officially returned to China.
