Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. About 80 percent of all wounds received in the war were inflicted by what weapons?

Answer: single shot muzzle loading rifles

Soldiers were either killed outright or died from infected wounds or amputations. Most rifles carried bayonets, but very few soldiers were injured by bayonets.
2. What song, written by Daniel D. Emmett in 1859 to advertise minstrel shows, became the unofficial national anthem of the Confederacy?

Answer: "Dixie"

Surprisingly, Emmett was not from the South. He was a native of Ohio and wrote the song in New York City.
3. What was odd about Abraham Lincoln's 1860 nomination for President at the Republican Convention?

Answer: he was not present

Lincoln was in Washington D.C. and did not travel to Chicago for the Republican Convention. This would be unimaginable today, but the normal practice then.
[ some sources suggest he waited out the convention at home in Springfield rather than in D.C. ]
4. In May 1861, half of the 400,000 volunteers for the Confederate Army were turned away. Why?

Answer: there were not enough arms and ammunition to equip them

Shortages of the materials of war haunted the South throughout the entire conflict. Stories abound of shoeless Southern troops using thorns for hypodermic needles and Spanish moss from indigenous trees as rope.
5. Who was the first Union officer to die in the conflict?

Answer: Col. Elmer Ellsworth

Col. Ellsworth was killed on May 24, 1861 in Alexandria, Virginia, after he lowered a Confederate flag from the Marshall House Inn.
6. The Civil War caused a reduction of troops in the West and Midwest. What was the most serious consequence this lead to?

Answer: more Indian uprisings

Less union firepower meant that the Native American population saw less risk in using violence to redress their grievances. This led to incidents such as the Apache Uprising, Navajo War and Santee Sioux Uprising.
7. What future U.S. President witnessed captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis being transported through his town on the way to federal prison?

Answer: Woodrow Wilson

Woodrow Wilson was 8 years old at the time the memorable event took place. Although he was a native of Staunton, Virginia, he was living in Augusta, Georgia at that time. Wilson also recalled seeing Sherman's troops at the front gate of his yard during "the March to the Sea."
8. Who were prime targets on both sides for enemy fire?

Answer: flag bearers

Carrying the flag in battle was one of the highest honors a soldier, North or South, could achieve. Their chances of being shot were considerably higher than those of an average soldier. Officers were also a choice target. A general's chances of being shot in battle were 50 percent higher than a private's.
9. Some 180,000 African-Americans fought for the North. How many died?

Answer: 36,000

Native Americans also died for the Union cause. Of the 3,530 who fought for the North, 1,018 gave their lives.
10. The government confiscated Robert E. Lee's home (Arlington) in 1864 when the Lees could not pay their taxes in person as required by law. Why was it turned into Arlington National Cemetery?

Answer: to prevent Lee from recovering the property

Lee's wife, Mary Custus, actually owned the estate. Mary was a descendant of George and Martha Washington.
