Spanish Language Trivia Questions

1. I've written a few quizzes about Dr. House, whose Spanish name would be Dr. Casa. If I said "el Dr. Casa se casa", what would he be doing soon?

From Quiz
Celebrando 300 Quizzes

Answer: Getting married

My first three quizzes placed online after hitting the 200 mark were about specific episodes of the successful TV show "House", starring Hugh Laurie. The show was about a brilliant yet unconventional diagnostician who, with the help of his talented team, is able to spot patients' obscure medical conditions that others can't. A "casa" in Spanish is a house or home. However, when used as a verb, "casar" or "casarse" means "to get married". Therefore, "el Dr. Casa se casa" means "Dr. House is getting married".

2. From the Arabic "al-qútun", we get the Spanish "algodón", the word for this substance that may have been new to the people of Iberia (Spain) during the Moorish rule of the peninsula in Medieval times.

From Quiz Spanish Words of Arabic Origin

Answer: Cotton

It is believed that cotton had been introduced, or at least imported, by Moorish (North African Arabs) during the 8th or 9th century A.D. (C.E.)

3. Which title is the Brothers Grimm's "Little Red Riding Hood" in Spanish?

From Quiz Cuentos de Hadas (Fairy Tales)

Answer: Caperucita Roja

This Brothers Grimm story (first published by French story teller Charles Perrault) is about a young girl, who is crossing the woods to visit her grandmother, and a big bad wolf. The words I chose for the wrong answers translate as: "Azul" is "blue" "Amarilla" is "yellow" "Añil" is "indigo"

4. "Give It Up For The Great Raul Di Blasio" was a quiz about an Argentinian musician. How would you say "up" in Spanish?

From Quiz Mis Quizzes en Español 2

Answer: Arriba

Raul Di Blasio is an Argentinian pianist and composer, known mainly for his piece "Corazon de Niño" (Heart of a Child), which he wrote after listening the ultrasound for his first child. The song is actually one of my favorites to play when I sit behind the piano! "Abajo" means "down", while "planta" means "plant", and "izquierda" means "left".

5. Película: "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios". How does this movie title translate in English?

From Quiz Pintura, Película, Libro o Canción

Answer: Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown

"Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios" (Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown) is a 1988 black comedy film by Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar. The wrong answers are fictional and they translate as: "Men On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown" is "Hombres al borde de un ataque de nervios". "Mothers On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown" is "Madres al borde de un ataque de nervios". "Lovers On The Verge Of A Nervous Laugh" is "Amantes al borde de un ataque de nervios".

6. Steve loved his video games much more than he did playing OUTDOORS. What is the Spanish equivalent of the word "outdoors"?

From Quiz Locate the Spanish Word

Answer: Al aire libre

The Spanish translation of the sentence is: Steve amaba sus juegos de video mucho máis de lo que le gustaba jugar al aire libre. "Dentro" is indoors. "Arriba" is upstairs. "Abajo" is downstairs.

7. Are you hungry? My first quiz was about food, so you might as well take a look at it! The title of that quiz was "The Great American Hamburger", so what would be the most literal (and logical) translation to Spanish?

From Quiz Mis Quizzes en Español

Answer: La Gran Hamburguesa Americana

The word "hamburger" actually comes from German, after the city of Hamburg in Germany. The origin of the hamburger is disputed, with several people claiming it as their invention, most notably in the United States and Germany. The other options were a bit weird, since "salchicha" means "sausage", "huevo" means "egg", and "cachetada" means "slap"!

8. Two of the shortest and most common words in Spanish differ by just an accent. Where would someone be if you described their actions as follows "Él elige el elepé"?

From Quiz What a Difference an Accent Makes

Answer: A record store

The sentence in the question, translated into English, is "He chooses the LP". "El" is the masculine definite object in Spanish - that is, a form of "the", while "él" translates to "he". They are pronounced the same, so the accent mark is used in writing to distinguish between these two very common words. When it comes to speech, you have to rely on context. Both "él" and "el" are ultimately derived from the same Latin root, the demonstrative "ille".

9. The Spanish word for yellow is also the name of a city in Texas and is part of the song title, "________ by Morning" sung by Country singer, George Strait.

From Quiz Spanish Basics

Answer: amarillo

"Amarillo" is correct. "Lovado" is not a real word. "Yellow" is English for, well...yellow. "Anaranjado" is Spanish for orange. The Country song, "Amarillo by Morning" by George Strait was released in 1982.

10. "Buenos dias, cómo estás?" You know that in Spanish "buenos dias" means good morning, but what does "cómo estás" mean?

From Quiz Why not Learn Spanish a Bit More?

Answer: How are you?

"Cómo estás" means "how are you" where "cómo" is "how" and "estás" is the verb "are". "Where are you" is translated as "dónde estás" or you can say "dónde eres tu" and "who are you" as "quien eres".

11. What is the literal English translation of the Spanish proverb "En tierra de ciego, el tuerto un rey"?

From Quiz Spanish Proverbs or Refranes

Answer: In the land of the blind, the one-eyed is king

This is the only one for which I know no English equivalent. It's great to say under your breath at a meeting. A few people will giggle every time.

12. What is the English translation for the Spanish word "patatas fritas"?

From Quiz Spanish (Food and Drink)

Answer: Chips/French fries

If you know that potatoes are patatas then you should get this easily.

13. Diego told his class that he flew to Irlanda. He told the students his two favorite places were the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. Where was Diego?

From Quiz Diego's Trip to Europe

Answer: Ireland

The awesomely beautiful Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland's most visited tourist attractions. The name burren comes from "bhoireann" meaning a stony place. Part of the Burren has been designated as one of Ireland's national parks. It has a fascinatingly strange landscape.

14. A guy could really turn red in the face if he said he was EMBARAZADA. Meaning to say he was embarrassed, instead what did he just tell you about himself?

From Quiz Spanish False Cognates

Answer: He is pregnant

He wouldn't be the first English speaker to make this mistake, but chances are he wouldn't do it again. He would fare better if he said TENGO VERGŨENZA and spare himself ... well, the embarrassment.

15. When an individual realizes the road to happiness lies beyond being rich how would he tell his amigo "Not everything that shines is gold?"

From Quiz Grandma Alicia's Dichos en Espanol

Answer: No todo lo que brilla es oro

When my grandma was a baby, she lost her sight. My tar tar abuela or great grandmother promised Our Lady of Talpa (another name for Mary, mother of Jesus), who was represented at the local Our Lady of Talpa Church in Sinaloa Mexico, two golden eyes if my grandma's sight was restored. My grandma's eyesight wasn't only restored and the two golden eyes put at the Our Lady of Talpa Shrine, but my grandma was married to my grandpa in their local church, Our Lady of Talpa Church in Los Angeles.

16. "I'm pregnant." In Spanish, I would say:

From Quiz Spanish Relations

Answer: Estoy embarazada

The adjective for pregnant is "embarazada", which can sound, to the novice, like you are saying you are embarrassed. While you may be married (casada) and waiting or hoping (esperando) for a baby, and you may have a big stomach, you aren't pregnant unless you're "embarazada". The verb form "estar" would be used, not "ser" to describe a temporary condition like pregnancy.

17. This (usually) red fruit has beautiful blossoms that are renowned in Washington DC and Japan. Como se dice en espanol esta fruta?

From Quiz Fruits and Colors

Answer: la cereza

The blossoms are pink but the fruit is rojo (red) and tasty in desserts.

18. During Lent, Pierre eats "poisson" every Friday. Pablo does the same thing. What food am I?

From Quiz Foods in French and Spanish

Answer: Pescado

"Poisson" and "pescado" are the words for fish. Interestingly enough, pez is the Spanish word for a living fish. Pescado literally means "a caught fish".

19. What is the word for "snake" in Spanish?

From Quiz Animals' Names in Spanish

Answer: serpiente

Sediento means "thirsty"; suelo (el suelo) means "ground, floor"; and salamandra (la salamandra) means "salamander". "Serpiente" (la serpiente) comes from the Latin "serpens, -entis", from "serpere" which means to crawl, to slither. In ancient Greece, the snake represented the health.

20. How would '¡Buenos dias!' be translated?

From Quiz How's Your Spanish Vocabulary?

Answer: Good day!

'Good night' and 'Good evening' are both translated as '¡Buenas noches!,' and see you later is '¡Hasta luego!'

21. What is the present tense (yo) form of "oír"?

From Quiz Spanish Tenses
