Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote this? "I visited every nook and cranny of the camp because I felt it my duty to be in a position from then on to testify at first hand about these things in case there ever grew up at home the belief or assumption that the stories of Nazi brutality were just propaganda."

Answer: Dwight D. Eisenhower (American General).

Eisenhower was Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe and wrote the book, 'Crusade in Europe'.
The text describes his reaction to Ohrdurf concentration camp, near Gotha. He also wrote: "I have never felt able to describe my emotional reactions when I first came face to face with indisputable evidence of Nazi brutality and ruthless disregard of every shred of decency. Up to that time I had known about it only generally or through secondary sources. I am certain, however, that I have never at any other time experienced an equal sense of shock."
2. In a speech, Hitler said the following words. "My programme was to abolish the _____________. It is nonsense to pretend I didn't reveal this until 1933 or 1935 or 1937. I have written and rewritten a thousand times these words - The abolition of the ___________" What is missing from the blanks?

Answer: Treaty of Versailles

The speech was made in Berlin on 20 January, 1941.
3. Who said, "The victor will never be asked if he told the truth."?

Answer: Adolf Hitler.

Rommel is one of the most respected military leaders that fought for Germany during World War II.
4. In October 1933, Hitler said this. Fill in the blank. The future of the nation is solely dependent on the maintenance of the ______.

Answer: Peasant.

Like most German nationalists, the Nazis had an ideological, though sentimental attachment to 'Blood and Soil' ('Blut und Boden', sometimes referred to jokingly as 'Blubo'). They thought the peasantry 'had roots' in the soil, unlike 'rootless' town-dwellers.

Between the years of 1934 and 1938 the Nazis gave the farmers tax relief and reduced interest rates. The farmers received over 300 million marks from the Nazis. The German peasantry gave the most support to the Nazi party in the early years, and as a result they were looked after very well.

On the other hand, Nazi decrees forbade the sale of smallholdings over ten hectares in area, with the result that most peasants were unable to obtain loans secured on their holdings.
5. In February 1945 Hitler said, "If we should lose this war it will mean that we have been defeated by the ________". What is missing from the blank?

Answer: Jews.

Hitler could not accept that the war was being lost as late as February, 1945. When President Roosevelt died in April 1945, Hitler saw a glimmer of hope and believed that the Nazi's could still turn things around to create a final victory in their favour.
6. Who said, "The aim of our struggle must be to create a unified Europe"?

Answer: Joseph Goebbels.

Goebbels gave the quote in 1943. He said that, "the aim of our struggle must be to create a unified Europe. The Germans alone can really organise Europe".
7. Who said, "As for myself, I think of looting, comprehensively"?

Answer: Hermann Goering.

Hermann Goering collected numerous works of arts that had been "liberated" from occupied countries. By 1945 he had collected over 2,000 pieces of art, 300 of which were paintings.
Numerous art works looted by the Nazis were stored in salt mines around Germany to protect them from Allied bombing raids.
8. Who said, "The air war has now turned into a crazy orgy...the Reich will be turned into a complete desert"?

Answer: Joseph Goebbels.

Adolf Galland was a fighter ace that fought for the Luftwaffe during WWII. He shot down over 90 enemy aircraft.
9. Hermann Goring, the head of the airforce (Luftwaffe), bragged about the Nazi air defences on 9 August, 1939 by saying, "Not a single bomb will fall on the Ruhr. If an enemy plane reaches the Ruhr, my name is not Hermann Goering - you can call me ________!" What is missing from the blank?

Answer: Meier.

Goring's boast was of little comfort to the population of Germany after the Allies conducted massive bombing raids on various German cities in the later years of the war. Many German cities were firebombed and that resulted in high civilian casualties and destruction.

Berlin was bombed early in the war - on 25 August 1940 by the RAF.
10. Born in 1891, this person praised Hitler by saying to those he commanded, "Heaven has sent us the leadership of the Fuhrer". In regards to his indictment at the Nuremberg Trials he said, "None of these indictments concern me in the least. Typical American humour". Who am I?

Answer: Karl Doenitz.

Karl Doenitz fought during WW1 in the German navy, and would later spend time as an officer on a German U-boat.
During WW2, Hitler made Doenitz the Supreme Commander of the Navy. Doenitz was a big advocate of the U-boat war and developed the 'wolf pack' submarine tactics. He became Hitler's successor in the final days of the war as the 'president' of Germany. (The post was suddenly revived by Hitler, who didn't want to award his successor the title of Führer). He held that position for 23 days. Doenitz was convicted of war crimes at the Nuremberg Trials.
