1. Harar
Harar is a coffee plant endemic to Ethiopia, which is home to many varieties of coffee. Harar has a fruity flavor that has been described as wine-like. It is one of the oldest varieties of coffee still in existence.
2. Blue Mountain
Blue Mountain is a coffee native to Jamaica. It grows in Jamaica's Blue Mountains which have rich soil due to steady rainfall. Blue Mountain coffee is highly regulated and the Jamaican government is very strict in classifying what may be called Blue Mountain coffee.
3. Kona
Kona is a type of coffee grown solely on Hawaii's Big Island on the slopes of Mauna Loa and Hualalai. It is an expensive coffee that is difficult to process and because it has a small harvest area.
4. Sagada
Sagada is a coffee plant grown in the Philippine highlands. It is named after the town of Sagada which is located in the mountains. Sagada is a coffee consumed mostly locally, however the international market has steadily grown in the 21st century.
5. Java
Java, while also a nickname for coffee in general, is also a type of coffee bean grown on the Indonesian island of Java. In the 1880s, most of the Java plants were killed by disease and the species was saved by breeding it with other types of coffee beans.
6. Starmaya
Starmaya is a hybrid breed of coffee bean grown in Nicaragua. It was bred to be immune from rust diseases which had been known to wipe out coffee crops.
7. Geisha
Geisha is a breed of coffee grown most popularly in the Panamanian Highlands. Geisha originated in Ethiopia but the most famous and expensive coffee beans come from Panama which has largely taken over the coffee as its own.
8. Charrier
Charrier is a breed of coffee found in Cameroon. Charrier does not contain caffeine nor is it grown commercially. Although on discovered in 2008 (much later than time than most other coffees), it considered threatened by the local timber industry.
9. Racemose
Racemose is a species of coffee grown along the coasts of South Africa. It has a very low caffeine content and is sometimes salted to bring out its subtle flavor.
10. Bourbon
Bourbon is a coffee bean that originated in Yemen but it is named after the Ile de Bourbon (Reunion) where the coffee drink was popular. Bourbon coffee plants produce more beans than most other plants but they are also more susceptible to disease.
