Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When musicals are similar, song titles seem to be repeated often. To start off, which character does NOT have a "Lament"?

Answer: Fiyero from "Wicked"

Chip's Lament (also called M.U.E.) is from "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee", and features him woeing about why he lost the spelling bee. The Diva's Lament is actually the Lady of The Lake's lament from "Spamalot", in which she complains about how she hasn't been on stage since Act 1. Adelaide's Lament is from "Guys and Dolls", where she realizes that, by waiting for her man to commit, she has come down with a cold.
2. What two musicals have a song titled "It Takes Two"?

Answer: "Hairspray" and "Into The Woods"

"Hairspray"'s "It Takes Two" is a song Link sings to Tracy to welcome her to the Corny Collins Show. The song is about how every man needs a girl by his side. "It Takes Two" from "Into the Woods" is sung by the Baker and his wife when the Baker realizes that he has to put away his pride and have his wife help him find the ingredients for the potion.
3. Which two musicals, respectively, have a song about saying "hello," and then "goodbye," to love?

Answer: "A Chorus Line" and "Rent"

"A Chorus Line" features "Montage, Part 1: Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen, Hello Love," about the childhoods of the various dancers. "Rent" features "Goodbye Love," about Mimi saying goodbye to Roger.
4. Now here's a twist: Both "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" and "Wicked" have songs that tell that "I'm not that _____" something. What are they about, respectively?

Answer: smart, girl

"I'm Not That Smart," from "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" stars Leaf Coneybear telling everyone that he's not that good at spelling. "I'm Not That Girl," from "Wicked", is where Elphaba sadly tells herself that the guy she loves will never love her.
5. Which two musicals tell us "I can" with the songs "I Can Do That" and "I Can Hear the Bells"?

Answer: "A Chorus Line" and "Hairspray"

"I Can Do That," from "A Chorus Line", features a dancer telling the audience how he got into dancing through his sister's dance class. "I Can Hear the Bells," from "Hairpsray", shows Tracy falling in love with Link and planning their future life together.
6. For a twist, two musicals give the audience completely different messages in "Forget About the Boy" and "Marry the Man Today." "Marry the Man Today" is from "Guys and Dolls." Which musical is "Forget about the Boy" from?

Answer: Thoroughly Modern Millie

"Forget about the Boy" is about Millie trying to get Jimmy out of her mind, while "Marry The Man Today" is about Adelaide and Sarah deciding to marry their men first, and fix their faults later.
7. Which two of these musicals insult French people as a recurring joke?

Answer: "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and "Spamalot"

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'" French jokes center around Andre, a French police officer with a horribly fake French accent. "Spamalot"'s French jokes are mostly in the song "Run Away," where the French guards taunt the English "knigits."
8. Dancing in musicals is a give-in, but which of these musicals does not have a song specifically about dancing?

Answer: Seussical

"A Chorus Line" has many dancing songs, such as "One," "I Hope I get It," and basically every song in the show involves dancing in some way! "Once on this Island" features the song "We Dance," about how dance is important to their island's culture. And "Rent" has the song "The Tango Maureen," about Maureen and her relationships (but they do tango in it!).
9. A good show also has to have a character's view on life! Which character does not have a song about their life views?

Answer: Marcy in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"

Fiyero's song is titled "Dancing through Life," during which he sings about how he doesn't try to do his best, but just has fun! Patsy sings "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," a cheer-up song for Arthur. Sally's song is appropriately called "My New Philosophy!"
10. Cats are a very popular animal in musicals (Does the famous musical titled simply "Cats" ring a bell?). Which of these musicals involve talking cats (and no, Cats isn't one of the options!)?

Answer: "Honk!" and "Seussical"

"Honk!"'s chatty feline is the tom cat, the "villain" of the show. "Seussical"'s cat is the famous Cat in the Hat, who is like the emcee of Seussical. And, of course, Cats also has plenty of talking cats!
11. Puppets - they are a staple in most musicals. But which show has survived without the fabric creatures in their cast?

Answer: Hairspray

"Avenue Q" is a racy show where much of the cast are puppets. Little Shop of Horrors stars the plant puppet Audrey 2. And "Forbidden Broadway" has puppets in its "Special Victim's Unit" in a song titled "You Gotta Get a Puppet!"
12. In every good musical, there has to be some kind of romance, right? But one of these shows has no romance at all! *Gasp*! Which one is it?

Answer: The Wiz

Surprisingly, "The Wiz" is one of the very few shows with no romance! But it still is a great show, and, can you believe it, another musical spin-off of The Wizard of Oz!
13. And of course, as "Spamalot" put it, all Broadway shows have to have a wedding, or at least an engagement! But which of these shows does not have either?

Answer: Chicago

"Guys and Dolls" features the ridiculous 14-year engagement of Adelaide and Nathan. "Wicked" features the surprise engagement of Glinda and Fiyero. "The Wedding Singer" is all about weddings (obviously), but mainly features the engagement and then called-off wedding of Robbie and Linda, the engagement and then called-off wedding of Julia and Glen, and then the final marriage of Robbie and Julia!
14. These two shows have a ton in common, namely the general plot scheme of men betting on women. They even share the same line, in two separate songs. The line is "I thought I knew the score." Name those musicals!

Answer: "Guys and Dolls" and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"

Very much alike, right? And in both of these shows, the women finally win the men's hearts! Awww! Both of these shows are not only similar in content, but also similar in quality! They are great, funny, wonderful shows!
15. These musicals may have the most in common of any in this whole quiz! Which two musicals show hopefuls competing in a competition while telling tales of their adolescences?

Answer: "A Chorus Line" and "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"

These are both great musicals involving competition and embarrassing childhood memories! Thank you for taking this quiz, and keep in mind that, although this quiz pointed out the similarities between musicals, each musical is unique and brilliant in its own way!
