Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This motorcycle is named for the female warriors of Norse myth who dragged soldiers fallen in battle to the home of the gods.

Answer: valkyrie

I love motorcycles!
2. This candy bar is named after the Roman god of war!

Answer: Mars Bar

Mmmm...chocolate!
3. A book of maps is named after what ill-fortuned Titan?

Answer: Atlas

Atlas was the unfortunate Titan whose punishment or job it was to hold the sky up on his shoulders. So, obviously he was strong, trustworthy, and dedicated. That's why various corporations use him as their symbol!
4. This major online seller of books and music, though it was actually named after the river, shares its title with the mythical community of female warriors.

Answer: amazon

There were actually more than one Amazonian tribe--one lived in Africa, the other in eastern Europe. Both were formidable and figured in a few Greek legends.
5. This mythical monster's name has now come to mean an impossible or foolish dream.

Answer: Chimera

The chimera was a beast whose body was that of a snake, she-goat, and lion combined. Apparently, she was not a really happy creature, as she laid waste to the countryside until Bellerophon and Pegasus stopped her but cutting off all three of her heads. Ouch!
6. This term for a person who possesses reproductive organs of both genders comes from a mythological character with a similar name, who did the same! Name the medical term for an individual with these traits, not the condition itself.

Answer: Hermaphrodite

Hermaphroditus was a son of Hermes and Aphrodite. A water nymph fell in love with him, but was rejected and begged the gods that they never be separated. With their characteristic sense of humor, they fused the two bodies of the young people into one.
7. Our planets, moons, and other heavenly bodies are named after mythological figures. Which of the following is NOT a moon?

Answer: Macaria

Deimos and Phobos are the moons of Mars, named for his sons. Io is a moon of Jupiter, named for one of his lovers. Macaria was a daughter of Heracles, and as far as I know, no heavenly body is named for her.
8. Which of the following Norse gods did NOT have a day of the week named for him?

Answer: Fenrir

Fenrir wasn't even a god, anyway, but the evil wolf who is, according to Norse tradtion, to devour the gods at the end of the world, which is called Ragnarok.
9. There are several myths surrounding the origin and foundation of ancient lands, and the Greeks were willing to claim part in many of them. According to the GREEKS, which of the following places was NOT named directly after a character in their own mythology?

Answer: Crete

As far as I know, Crete was not named after a particular person. For anyone interested, yes, Rome's most commonly thought to be named after Romulus, the young man who killed his brother Remus in a fight over the city. However, this is a Roman myth. The Greek one is that a Trojan girl named Roma or Rhome who incited the other Trojan captives to set fire to their ships and begin a colony on the first place they saw, which happened to be what we now know as Rome. Alternate Greek legends name her as a soothsayer who instructed Evander to found the city of Rome, originally formed as Pallentea.

Interesting, huh?
10. Which of the following plants was NOT named for a character in Greek mythology?

Answer: Chrysanthemum

Menthe=mint, Myrrha=myrrh, Narcissus=narcissus! The term chrysanthemum also came from the Greek words meaning 'gold' and 'flower', but it is not from the name of any particular character. Thanks for that tidbit, Machiabelly! I appreciate it!
