Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This story is a sequel to "The Eagle Has Landed". It is revealed that Kurt Steiner has survived the failed mission to kill Winston Churchill and is being held prisoner in the Tower of London. The Germans seek to break him out in which Jack Higgins novel?

Answer: The Eagle Has Flown

The first book had left us with the impression that Steiner had been killed in his attempt to assassinate the British leader, but it turns out that he was only wounded. Admittedly, he was in a bad way, and it took some pretty nifty surgery to bring him around. Once he was well enough he was transferred to the Tower of London. Walter Schellenberg sees positives in this. If they can break him out it would present them with the perfect propaganda opportunity, so once again he coerces Liam Devlin to assist him with the new scheme. Devlin succeeds in his mission and he's almost at the point of handing Steiner over to Himmler when Schellenberg discovers that Himmler is planning to use this as a chance to assassinate Hitler and, consequently, sets in train a chain of events to stop this from happening.
2. Martin Fallon sets a bomb that accidently destroys a school bus full of children. It wreaks havoc with his conscience and he looks to get out of the IRA, but the price for his freedom is to do one last job for a vicious British gangster. Is this the plot for the Jack Higgins novel "A Prayer For the Dying"?

Answer: Yes

Martin is one of the IRA's best killers but his plan to take out a British Army patrol has gone badly awry. He sneaks out of Ireland and seeks the help of Jack Meehan, a notorious gangster, to obtain passage and passports to America. Meehan requests that he takes out a rival gang leader as payment in full for the service. Reluctantly, Fallon accepts, but as he completes the assignment he is witnessed by a local parish priest. Rather than kill the priest Fallon buys his silence by giving him his confession. Meehan is not happy with the outcome. The priest is a loose end he cannot afford, and orders Martin to take him out. He refuses and now he has both Meehan and the IRA, who consider him a security risk, out to kill him.

[SPOILER] This is the second time that Higgins has used a character with name of Martin Fallon and on both occasions he's killed them off.
3. In his stormy last days, desperate to secure the survival of National Socialism, Adolf Hitler entrusts Martin Bormann with a sealed case that contains documents boasting a list of Nazi sympathisers. Among the names on that list is the Duke of Windsor. The U-Boat carrying Bormann to South America never reaches its destination in which Jack Higgins' story?

Answer: Thunder Point

Jump forward fifty years, and a lone diver has discovered the wreck of the U-Boat in the pristine waters surrounding the Virgin Islands. He manages to salvage the captain's log, but doesn't realise that the real treasure dwells deeper inside behind water tight doors. British Intelligence gets wind of the discovery along with a number of other interested parties. The race is now on and, in desperation, the British employ an international terrorist, Sean Dillon, to salvage the case before it falls into the wrong hands.

Dillon, the champagne loving Irishman, proves to be one of Higgins' strongest and most endearing characters, appearing in over fifteen of his novels.
4. In which Jack Higgins' novel are we told the tale of Britain's greatest actress whose other job is as an assassin for a group called "January 30", a group whose sole aim appears to be to create chaos?

Answer: Angel of Death

The group, January 30, is supposedly named after the date of the British "Bloody Sunday" massacre in Belfast. Whilst their targets appear to be random and indiscriminate, they are carefully crafted hits that are all part of a cleverly designed plot by Rupert Lang. Lang proves to be a Russian spy who has managed to work his way into being a vital member of the Prime Minister John Majors' cabinet, and is seeking to usher in a new Communist regime.

The Prime Minister calls in his elite team, Group Four, which includes their own actor and terrorist Sean Dillon, when he gets word that January 30 are planning to hit a prominent US senator who is visiting Ireland with the aim of brokering a peace deal.
5. Jack Higgins tells the story of Max and Harry Kelso, twin brothers separated at birth, who wind up being fighter "aces" on opposing sides during World War II in which one of his acclaimed novels?

Answer: Flight of Eagles

When his father is killed in a car accident Max is taken to Germany by his mother who is looking to climb the social ranks amongst the Nazi elite. Harry remains in the United States under the care of his grandfather. Inspired by the memory and the deeds of their father, an ace pilot during World War I, both of the brothers become pilots. Max joins the Luftwaffe and Harry enrols with the Royal Air Force.

When Harry is shot down over France, Max is blackmailed by Himmler to take Harry's place, escape to England and assassinate General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
6. Craig Osbourne's mission has failed, and now he floats in the waters off the coast of Brittany. A German U-Boat is moving toward him, this will be no safe haven and he senses his war is over. A hand reaches out and hauls him onto the boat where he comes face to face with a man he knew in Harvard. So starts which Jack Higgins story?

Answer: Cold Harbour

Cold Harbour proves to be a small village on the edge of Cornwall in England. However, it is not your normal little village, because all the citizens there dress, act and behave like Germans with the aim to train operatives to act accordingly when they are dropped behind enemy lines. Osbourne is recruited to help place Genevieve Trevaunce into her family home, the Chateau de Voincourt, in Nazi occupied France.

Their (the British) aim is to use Genevieve to gather valuable information about German movements now that their own plans for D-Day are about to be put in motion.

However, in this realm of deception the deceivers soon find out that it is they who have been deceived.
7. The Argentineans have set their minds to invading the Falklands, but the British are waiting and think they have them covered. What the British don't know is that their enemy is extremely close to getting their hands on a powerful weapon that is likely to tip the scales. This storyline is played out in which Jack Higgins novel?

Answer: Exocet

The British have a mighty and highly effective navy. The Argentineans have an air force that is ready to die for its country. In what appears to be an evenly matched contest a set of deadly little Exocet missiles can make all the difference. The South Americans put their most experienced buyer, Raul, in motion.

A third player, the Soviet Union, sees an opportunity to undermine both nations and begins to engineer the events to their favour. In response the British place their faith in Gabrielle, a cold and ruthless spy, who is capable of handling any situation. That is, until she falls in love with the dashing Raul.
8. In which Jack Higgins novel are we introduced to John Mikali, a brilliant musician whose prowess with the piano is matched only by his skills as an assassin? He has managed to leave a trail of corpses around the globe, but he's about to find that his last victim will cause him all sorts of grief.

Answer: Solo

Mikali has killed the teenage daughter of a highly feared SAS soldier. She wasn't a target, she simply happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her father, Asa Morgan, who is also a skilled killer, has made a commitment to catch the man who has killed his daughter. "Solo" is written from two angles - Mikali's and Morgan's - as Higgins describes a game of cat and mouse between two experts in the art of stalking and death.
9. In 1939 Gavin Kane and Ruth Cunningham go looking for Ruth's husband, who disappeared while searching for a legendary lost temple, and stumble upon a devilish German plot in which Jack Higgins' story?

Answer: Sheba

The lost temple of Sheba is said to have been buried in the sands of the Rub' al Khali, the dreaded Empty Quarter. It is the largest sand desert in world, and a haven for death and outlaws. Kane needs to call upon all his ingenuity if he is to survive in this environment. To complicate matters, the only clues he has are the unorthodox scribblings of an ancient Greek adventurer called Alexias. To cut a long story short, Kane and Ruth do find the temple, but they've been beaten to it by the Germans who have set it up as the base for their operation to destroy the Suez Canal.
10. The year is 1982 and Pope John Paul, having survived assassination attempts by the Bulgarians and the Turks, has arrived in England for a visit. However, in the crowd sits one of Europe's deadliest assassins looking to finish the job his predecessors couldn't. This gripping storyline may be good for the soul, but it doesn't look good for the Pope in which Jack Higgins' novel?

Answer: Confessional

The assassin's name is Cuchulain, and for decades he has left a trail of chaos and the odd dead body all across Ireland. British Intelligence has no idea who he is or that he is a KGB agent. Not only is Cuchulain clever and an expert shot, he also has the perfect cover for the job: he's set himself up over the years as a Catholic priest. The daughter of a KGB general, Tanya Voroninova, is the only person who can identify Cuchulain, and the only person who is likely to convince her to defect is Liam Devlin. Unfortunately for British Intelligence, he's also their sworn enemy.
