1. 'Three Sisters' - Anton Chekhov

'Three Sisters' is a play by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. The play had its first performance in 1901 in Moscow. The play centres on Olga, Masha and Irina Prozorov who are the three sisters of the title. The sisters live in an unnamed provincial Russian town and find their life boring with them desiring instead to live in Moscow where there is more interest and excitement.

When their brother Andrei makes an ill-advised marriage to Natalia any dreams the sisters have of leaving their provincial life and moving to Moscow vanish as Andrei is now stuck in the provincial town and racking up debts.
2. 'Hedda Gabler' - Henrik Ibsen

'Hedda Gabler' is a play by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen which was first performed in 1891 in Munich. The play is set in the house of Jorgen Tesman, husband of the titular Hedda Gabler, in the Norwegian city of Kristiania (the former name for Oslo). The play focuses on Hedda and her boredom as a woman trapped in a marriage and existence she does not want.
3. 'Murder in the Cathedral' - TS Eliot

'Murder in the Cathedral' is a play by the poet and playwright T.S. Eliot which was first performed in 1935. The play is a verse drama rather than being written in prose. The play revolves around the 1170 murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral and is primarily set in the Archbishop's hall and Canterbury Cathedral.
4. 'Hamlet' - William Shakespeare

'Hamlet' is a tragedy by William Shakespeare believed to have been written sometime between 1599 and 1601. The play is set at the Danish Royal Court and sees the character of Hamlet seek revenge against his uncle Claudius for the murder of his father.
5. 'The Crucible' - Arthur Miller

'The Crucible' by the American playwright Arthur Miller, was first performed in 1953 in New York City and is a fictionalised account of the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s. The play is set in the town of Salem in the state of Massachusetts. While ostensibly about the historical witch trials the play was written as an allegory for the persecution of people perceived as being communists during the McCarthyism of the 1950s.
6. 'Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again' - Ola Rotimi

'Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again' is a 1999 play by the Nigerian playwright Ola Rotimi and focuses on contemporary African politics. The play centres on former Major Lekoja-Brown and his attempts to pursue a political career in Nigeria despite being motivated more by vanity than by patriotism. Lekoja-Brown's problems worsen after he makes a polygamous marriage to Liza, a Kenyan woman who has studied to be a doctor in the US, despite having two wives already.

Despite not knowing about the first two wives until she arrives in Nigeria Liza forms an alliance with the other wives further adding to Lekoja-Brown's humiliation.
7. 'Night of the Iguana' - Tennessee Williams

'Night of the Iguana' is a play by the American playwright Tennessee Williams. The play is based on a short story Williams wrote in 1948 and he originally turned it in to a one act play in 1959 before developing a three act version that had its Broadway premiere in 1961.

The play is set in Mexico and centres on the character of Reverend Shannon, a lusty priest who is working as a tour guide in Mexico having been defrocked for sexual impropriety.
8. 'Dancing at Lughnasa' - Brian Friel

'Dancing at Lughnasa' is a 1990 play by the Irish playwright Brian Friel. The play is set in the summer of 1936 in County Donegal in Ireland. The story is told as a reminiscence by the narrator Michael Evans who remembers a summer spend at his aunts' cottage in the fictional town of Ballybeg when he was seven years old.
9. 'The Taming of the Shrew' - William Shakespeare

'The Taming of the Shrew' is a comedy by William Shakespeare written sometime between 1590 and 1592 and set in the Padua region of Italy The play follows Petruchio as he tries to woo the headstrong Katherina, who is the shrew of the title. At first Petruchio struggles but over the course of the play he gradually tricks and torments Katherina into becoming his obedient bride.

The play has attracted modern controversy over whether the plot is misogynistic.
10. 'Our Country's Good' - Timberlake Wertenbaker

'Our Country's Good' is a play by the British playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker first performed in 1988. The play is based on Thomas Keneally's 1987 novel 'The Playmaker'. The play is set in the 1780s in the then penal colony of New South Wales in modern day Australia and centres around a group of convicts and soldiers of the Royal Marines who together put on a production of George Farquhar's 1706 play 'The Recruiting Officer'.
