Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was one of the visions that the monolith gave Moon-Watcher?

Answer: a peaceful, well-fed nuclear family

With this image of a family situation he's never known, Moon-Watcher now has the impetus to achieve that goal, though he can only do it once he masters basic tool technology and carnivorism.
2. What menaces Moon-Watcher and his tribe when they're in the cave one night?

Answer: the leopard

The leopard, symbol of the untamed and wild in the world, tracks the dead antelope into Moon-Watcher's cave, but doesn't realize that the tribe has mastered hand-held weapons. In a somewhat sad effort to escape, it rns out of the cave and off the cliff to its death.
3. Finish the classic end to one of the chapters: "Frank Poole would be the first of all men..."

Answer: ...to reach Saturn."

After Hal kills Frank Poole, David Bowman takes comfort in knowing that his friend's body will make it to Saturn before any other man - alive or dead.
4. What triggers TMA-1 to emit a blast of electronic noise?

Answer: the first sunlight to fall upon it

Created as a signaling device of sorts that lets its makers know when mankind has achieved a certain level of technology, TMA-1 shrieks out a blast of radio noise (when the sunlight hits it for the first time in millions of years) that streaks across the solar system, then falls silent forever.
5. The Discovery uses Jupiter to do what?

Answer: to gain velocity on its way to Saturn

Clarke well understood the concept of a gravity well and how it could add momentum to a moving object. Bowman and Poole use Jupiter's immense gravitational well to slingshot their way to Saturn. In return, Jupiter loses exactly as much velocity as Discovery gained.
6. When Earth starts sending instructions on how to disconnect HAL, what unexpected event starts to happen?

Answer: the AE-35 antenna swings offline

In a desperate attempt to save itself, HAL manipulates the AE-35 antenna, drawing Frank Poole outside on what ultimately becomes a fatal mission.
7. Once David Bowman is alone on the ship and has disconnected HAL, how does he finally keep himself company?

Answer: the music of Bach

Bowman finds he can't bear the human voice anymore and finds solace and comfort in "the abstract architecture of Bach."
8. What extra-terrestrial feature does Bowman discover on the surface of Japetus?

Answer: the Stargate

The Stargate had been waiting millions of years for just this moment. One Bowman guided his little pod down to its surface, it opened and started him on his metaphysical and fantastic journey towards rebirth.
9. As Bowman travels through spacetime, what does he see that unnerves him?

Answer: all of these

Bowman's world is literally turned upside down; all the usual laws of physics are suspended or broken and he finds himself desperately struggling to cope with what all his training tells him can't be true.
10. As the Starchild contemplates the Earth floating before it, what is one of the actions it considers as its next move?

Answer: stop a nuclear war by detonating the airborne missiles

The Starchild, which is what David Bowman has become, is the next evolutionary step for humans. It has power beyond understanding, though it doesn't quite know how to use it yet.
