Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bob Boyd, a geologist who's lost some of his memories, takes on a job in British Columbia where some small signs start to trigger images from his past, along with an accident he was involved in and a major cover up. What story is this?

Answer: Landslide

"Landslide" delves into the world of corporate intrigue, cover ups and murder. Set in the forests of British Columbia we follow the story of geologist Bob Boyd in a lone battle against a logging and hydro electric company. Some old memories resurface and they're the kind that could get him killed. Suddenly he finds himself on the run from killers and grizzly bears. This was Bagley's fourth novel and was published in 1967. It was made into a television movie in 1992 with Anthony Edwards of "ER" fame in the lead role.
2. Mike Trevelyan's brother dies of what appears to be natural causes. Mike begins to suspect otherwise on the evening that his flat is broken into. And this may not have been the only mistake the burglars made, in which Desmond Bagley story?

Answer: Night of Error

The thieves have stolen Mike's brother's personal effects, all but a small nodule of manganese that had rolled under the bed and a diary containing a series of his brother's shorthand codes. The manganese proves to be more than the ordinary mineral it looks like and soon Mike finds himself sailing the seas to distant corners of the globe with a murderous band at his heels and the eruption of an underwater volcano to keep things interesting. "Night of Error" was Bagley's second last novel and was published in 1984.
3. A ferocious storm looks like passing harmlessly by a series of Caribbean Islands but a civilian weather expert believes it will change course. Only trouble is, no one will believe him, in which Bagley thriller?

Answer: Wyatt's Hurricane

David Wyatt has a freakish ability to predict hurricanes but scientific evidence says that he's wrong. He cannot convince the authorities to begin taking precautions and as Hurricane Mabel bears down on them a rebellion breaks out on the island totally drowning out his lone voice. This was Bagley's third book and it was published in 1966.
4. Giles Dennison looks in the mirror to see someone else's face where his should be. He now walks a very fine line as he tries to extricate himself from which Desmond Bagley mystery?

Answer: The Tightrope Men

Dennison finds himself in a luxury hotel in Oslo with no idea as to how he got there or how he's ended up with someone else's identity. He decides to play along with the game but soon finds himself on a mission to retrieve a document from behind the Iron Curtain, a mission where his failure could see a change in the balance of power between the East and the West.
"The Tightrope Men" was published in 1973.
5. Jeremy Wheale's brother is brutally murdered by the mafia. When Jeremy finds a note and a family heirloom, it draws him into a search for a long lost Mayan city, in which Desmond Bagley novel?

Answer: The Vivero Letter

The hunt will take Jeremy from picturesque Devon in England to the wilds of the Yucatan Peninsula where he joins forces with a team of archaeologists as they seek to track down the ancient city of Uaxuanoc and the fortune in gold that it supposedly holds. The bad news for Jeremy is that the mafia is also aware of this treasure and they are in pursuit of his little band. Their attention has also been captured by a band of mercenaries called the Chicleros. It is not long into their journey when he also suspects that the archaeologists are not exactly who they claim to be.
"The Vivero Letter" was first published in 1968 and became a movie in 1999 starring Robert Patrick and Fred Ward.
6. Desmond Bagley's first novel involves a yacht designer who gets involved in a plan to recover gold stolen from the Germans during World War II. What is the title of this story?

Answer: The Golden Keel

Peter Halloran is the yacht designer and he has the perfect vehicle with which to smuggle the gold out of the country, hence the name of the title. Unfortunately events lead him to distrust his partners; evidence that surfaces about the initial robbery brings more questions and doubts about the venture than answers and, worse, there are now other parties interested in the treasure and they are hot on their tail.
7. A British agent is sent to prison to bring down "The Scarperers", a gang that specialises in breaking out long term prisoners. What is the title of this Desmond Bagley novel?

Answer: The Freedom Trap

This novel became the 1973 film "The Mackintosh Man", which starred Paul Newman. The story reintroduces a captured Russian double agent, Slade ("Running Blind"), who becomes the target for the Scarperers. They enlist the help of long term prisoner Owen Stannard who, unbeknownst to them, is a British intelligence officer planted in the prison to bring down the gang.

In the course of the action Stannard uncovers another Russian double agent placed much higher than the notorious Slade; however, Stannard's position becomes perilous when the only man who knows he is not a genuine prisoner is killed.
8. When Malcolm Jaggard, an intelligence agent, runs a background check on his fiancée's father he finds that does not have sufficient clearance to do so, that he's alerted the KGB, and that he may have uncovered a double agent. Which Bagley story are we looking at here?

Answer: The Enemy

Malcolm's check triggers alarm bells in the corridors of Whitehall and the abrupt disappearance of his future father in law. Jaggard uncovers a lab conducting illegal experiments in genetic engineering and suddenly finds himself being pursued through the forests of Sweden to the Highlands of Scotland. Published in 1977 it is seen as one of Bagley's better reads; however, an attempt to bring it to the big screen in 2001 was not so successful.
9. Forty years previously a famous aviator disappeared while competing in a race from London to South Africa. Was it insurance fraud or something more sinister? What is the title of this Desmond Bagley thriller?

Answer: Flyaway

Max Stafford runs a security firm that specialises in industrial espionage. His marriage has failed and his job no longer lights his candle. He takes a small job to keep himself "occupied" but soon finds himself alone confronting people with much larger resources who are prepared to kill to prevent him uncovering the truth of the air race mystery.
10. Former spy Alan Stewart is given a simple task; deliver a small package to a man in Iceland. It was so simple that Alan didn't know where to look. Which story did Bagley write here?

Answer: Running Blind

Fortunately for Stewart he has an Icelandic girlfriend and he speaks the language fluently. In what is supposed to be Alan's last job for "the company" things go awry from the very beginning. Suddenly Stewart cannot trust his own countrymen, he's being attacked by the US Air Force and he's got a crack Russian hit squad on his tail. Published in 1970, the story was turned into a three part thriller for BBC Television in 1979.
