Darren, at the beginning of the book, has a special fondness for spiders. He had collected them for all of his life, until he had lost one in the house, and his parents wouldn't let him keep any more. This liking, however, didn't last for much longer...

The story, at the very start, begins, as Darren Shan states, not where there are demons or vampires lurking in every corner, but in a normal place, exactly how a true story should begin. He was on the toilet!

Steve, who would 'borrow' money from his mum, was definitely going to the Cirque Du Freak, as he was the only one who could afford to go. But for the others to decide, a piece of paper was ripped up into lots of pieces, with a special one in the mix which had a mark on it. Whoever caught that one would be going with Steve. Darren waited whilst the other two scuffled about, until he had a feeling, and then he grabbed. Luckily... or was it?... he caught the right one!

Answer: The Wolf -Man

The first act that Steve and Darren see at the Cirque Du Freak is the Wolf-Man, a man who is half-man, half-wolf. He is hypnotised, and taken around the tent for people to touch him. He is then suddenly awoken, and bites a woman's hand off! Luckily, small blue cloaked people come out and sew it back on for her (these people are later known as 'Little People').

Answer: Vur Horston

Steve claims to have seen Mr. Crepsley in a comic book that he owned. He said that in it, he was a vampire, known as Vur Horston. His fears actually were that this could be him in real life: a vampire!

After Steve tells Darren to go back home, whilst he stayed for a while, Darren secretly goes up on the balcony, and spies on him, and finds out that he has gone to meet with 'Mr. Crepsley'.

Answer: Evil

Steve, after meeting with Mr. Crepsley on the Cirque Du Freak stage, asks him to turn him into a vampire. Mr. Crepsley tests his blood first, to see if he is worthy. After doing this, he describes the taste that he got as 'evil'!

Answer: A spider

Mr. Crepsley's act in the Cirque Du Freak consists of himself performing tricks with his pet spider, Madam Octa. When Darren sees this spider, he is instantly in love. And when he sees that Mr. Crepsley has told Steve that he had evil blood, Darren feels even more obliged to steal from him. So, one morning, whilst the vampire was sleeping, Darren went to where the Cirque was put up, and stole the spider from him, leaving nothing but a note telling him not to come looking for the spider or himself.

Answer: Fell from his bedroom window

When Steve and Darren are playing with Madam Octa in Darren's bedroom, Annie walks in and startles the spider, who then digs her fangs deep into Steve's neck, who is then left in a coma. The only way to save Steve is for Darren to be taken under the wings of Mr. Crepsley and become a creature of the night.

When Darren is supposedly lying dead in his living-room, waiting for the next day, when he will be buried, Steve comes in, and places a piece of Litmus paper onto his tongue. This is to support his ideas that Darren Shan has supposedly taken his place as a creature of the night...
