Roxane visits Fenoglio and says she is going to find Dustfinger. Fenoglio knows that Meggie is with Dustfinger so he lets Roxane take the note to her for Fenoglio.

Dustfinger says these exact words right before he shows his little secret to Farid. Dustfinger mixed fire and water together and receives soot from fairies that will make him invisible until sunrise, so that he and Farid can sneak into the castle to try to save Meggie, Mo, and Resa.

When Farid, Dustfinger, the Black Prince, and others are going to Mount Adder, Farid sees red berries. He is about to pick them up, but Dustfinger stops him. He tells Farid that Mortola scatters the berries around and "bitterberry" trees grow. The berries of the trees are poisonous and so are its leaves. The bark of bitterberry trees can burn your skin better than everything, even fire.

Mo is to bind the Adderhead a book, Fenoglio wrote. The book would make the Adderhead immortal, but if heart, spell, and death were written on the blank white pages of his book, he would die. The White Women would come fetch him, which he feared much.

When Farid and Dustfinger are at Mount Adder, Basta and some men suddenly appear. Dustfinger uses fire to kill most of his men and Basta is so upset that he throws his knife right at Farid and kills him. Later, Dustfinger gives his life to the White Women and brings Farid back from the dead.

Fenoglio wrote one last thing for Meggie to read. That paragraph that Fenoglio wrote said that the great poet, Inkweaver, would stop writing. Orpheus would take his place and bring Dustfinger back to life.
