Meggie gets to see Prince Jacopo, Violante and the Prince of Sighs. Violante, Cosimo's widow, is better known as 'Her Ugliness'. She has a disfiguring mark on her face. Fenoglio tells the Prince that Meggie is his granddaughter. The Prince seems to making himself ill, grieving for his son, Prince Cosimo. Dustfinger attends the festivities at Ombra Castle, but keeps out of sight. He has a new marten, Jink. Farid is doing well, earning coins as a fire-eater. Dustfinger sees his daughter, Brianna, the maidservant to Violante. But he does not speak to her. The Black Prince is delighted to see his old friend. Farid is excited to see Fenoglio and Meggie, but Dustfinger doesn't want to see either of them. Dustfinger plans to hide out in a secret camp, used by the Strolling Players, for a while.

Orpheus is like Mo and Meggie. He can read people into books, as well as read them out. Farid nicknames Orpheus Cheeseface. Dustfinger gives Orpheus 'Inkheart', the book he stole from Mo. He tells Orpheus to read him and Farid back into the book. He then gives Farid the book to look after, although Orpheus longs to keep it himself. Gwin, the marten, will not be read back into the book. Orpheus manages to read Dustfinger back into 'Inkheart' but not Farid.

Meggie tries to read aloud, in secret, from a book, like Mo does. But nothing happens. Mo is repairing some of Fenoglio's books. Mo has gone to collect Elinor from the airport. Basta and Flatnose go to see Fenoglio. They don't believe Fenoglio wrote 'Inkheart'. They are going to take Meggie and Fenoglio to Capricorn's village.
