Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Stephen King has collaborated with which other horror author?

Answer: Peter Straub

Stephen King and Peter Straub first collaborated on "The Talisman", and then came together again for the sequel, "Black House". Many fans of the two books feel that a third is needed to complete the story. In his own right Peter Straub has won the Bram Stoker Award, World Fantasy Award and International Horror Guild Award.
2. Mary Westmacott is a second identity for which crime writer?

Answer: Agatha Christie

Starting in 1930 Agatha Christie wrote six books as Mary Westmacott. They were very different from her crime fiction novels, and have been described as romantic novels. They are not however conventional love stories. Instead they focus on particular types of love or relationships, such as the love between mother and child and the love/hate relationship between siblings.
3. David Eddings frequently wrote in collaboration with his wife. What was her name?

Answer: Leigh

David Eddings wrote many best selling fantasy works, including "The Belgariad", which is probably his best known work, and "The Mallorean". From the mid 1990s his wife, Leigh, was credited as co-author, and he later admitted that she had contributed to all his works. Leigh Eddings died in 2007, and David Eddings died in 2009.
4. Jean Plaidy wrote under several names. Phillipa Carr was one; which is another?

Answer: Victoria Holt

Eleanor Hibbert wrote historical novels as Jean Plaidy and these had, and still have, a massive worldwide following. Under the name of Victoria Holt she resurrected the gothic romantic novel genre. Most of the books feature gloomy or threatening manor houses, young girls forced to be governesses or ladies companions, and brooding, handsome heroes.
5. Erin Hunter, author of the "Warriors" fantasy novels, is actually several people writing in collaboration. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Barbara Cartland

Erin Hunter is the pen name of three ladies, Kate Cary, Cherith Baldry and Tui Sutherland with another lady, Victoria Holmes, acting as editor. Writing alternates between them, so in a typical series of six books each will have written two. Between them they have written several series of fantasy books for children, all following the adventures of four clans of wild cats.

The pseudonym Erin Hunter has also been used for some books other than the "Warriors" series, with other authors contributing to the product.
6. C.S. Lewis used which pen name for "A Grief Observed"?

Answer: N. W. Clerk

"A Grief Observed" comprises the reflections of C.S. Lewis on the feelings of grief he had following the death of his wife. At the time of publication he preferred not to be identified as the author, and it was not until after his death that the book was re-published under his name. It helped inspire the 1993 film "Shadowlands".
7. After writing in collaboration with his mother, which author is now continuing the "Dragonriders of Pern" series in his own name?

Answer: Todd McCaffrey

Anne McCaffrey has passed the mantle of writing the "Drangonriders of Pern" books on to her son Todd, who has now written several in his own right. In the past she has also collaborated with Elizabeth Scarborough and Margaret Ball on the "Acorna" series. One of the most prolific of fantasy writers, she has written the "Tower and Hive" series, and the "Brain and Brawn Ship" series, some in collaboration, and many others.
8. Barbara Vine also writes the "Wexford" novels. Under which name are these published?

Answer: Ruth Rendell

Chief Inspector Reginald Wexford has become a very popular figure in crime fiction. He has featured in several of Ruth Rendell's books, starting with "From Doon With Death" published in 1964. Her books all exhibit a keen insight into the human mind, which is especially evident in the books written as Barbara Vine.

These come under the psychological thriller category rather than a straight "who dun it". Ruth Rendell was made a life peer in 1997 and has the title Baroness Rendell of Babergh.
9. Which audio book, overall winner of the 2008 Audies Awards, was a collaboration between fifteen different authors?

Answer: The Chopin Manuscript

"The Chopin Manuscript" is a fast paced thriller of sixteen chapters, with a different author for each chapter save for the first and the last. Jeffrey Deaver, David Hewson, James Grady, S. J. Rozan, Erica Spindler, John Ramsey Miller, David Corbett, John Gilstrap, Joseph Finder, Jim Fusilli, Peter Speigleman, Ralph Pezzullo, Lisa Scottoline, P. J. Parish, Lee Child and finally Jeffrey Deaver again, all accepted the challenge of writing a chapter that picked up where the previous author left off.

The audio book is read by Alfred Molina.
10. John Creasey was a prolific author with many pseudonyms. Under which name did he write his "Gideon of The Yard" series?

Answer: J.J. Marric

All of the choices are pseudonyms used by John Creasey who published over 600 books in some 28 different names. Among his creations were "The Toff", "The Baron" and "Gideon of The Yard". As well as crime fiction he wrote westerns in the names of Tex Riley and Ken Ranger, and even some romantic fiction as Margaret Cooke.
