Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This book was also published under other titles. Which were they?

Answer: Both of these

It was initially titled 'The Patriotic Murders' and later 'An Overdose of Murder'.
2. The telegram summoning Morley's secretary, Miss Gladys Nevill, to Somerset was a hoax.

Answer: True

One day prior to Morley's murder, Gladys received a telegram saying her aunt had suffered a stroke and summoning her to Somerset immediately. However, on reaching there, she found her aunt to be in perfect health.
3. Julia Olivera had recently come to England along with her daughter, Jane, and lived at Alistair Blunt's house. Where had they come from?

Answer: America

Julia, Alistair Blunt's niece by marriage, was unhappy with her daughter's growing fondness for Howard Raikes. She brought her to England in order to separate them. She also hoped that Alistair Blunt would take a liking to Jane and leave her the bulk of his estate since he had no other close relatives.
4. Henry Morley committed suicide.

Answer: False

The police thought that Morley committed suicide after mistakenly giving a Greek patient, Mr. Amberiotis, an overdose of anesthetic that led to his death. Hercule Poirot wasn't as convinced and decided to continue with his investigations.
5. Whose dead body did the police find at King Leopold Mansions?

Answer: Mabelle Sainsbury Seale

The body was found in a large metal chest in a flat belonging to Mrs. Alice Chapman. The face of the corpse was battered beyond recognition. A handbag containing a letter addressed to Mabelle Sainsbury Seale was found inside the chest.
6. Who (really) was the woman living in a small cottage on Alistair Blunt's estate at Exsham?

Answer: His wife, Gerda

Blunt told everyone that the woman living in the cottage was his distant cousin, Helen Montressor from Canada. It is later revealed that Helen had died a few years ago. The woman impersonating her was Blunt's first wife, Gerda. He had hidden his earlier marriage in order to marry Rebecca Arnholt for her wealth and the power it would give him. Gerda acquiesced to the situation. Even after Rebecca's death, they didn't marry and preferred to continue meeting clandestinely.
7. Who tried to shoot Alistair Blunt at his house at Kent?

Answer: None of these

Frank Carter was trimming a laurel hedge with a pair of clippers while Blunt was showing Poirot his garden. All of a sudden, a shot went off and Raikes caught Carter with the gun in his hand. Carter claimed to have just picked up the gun which had fallen near his feet but was arrested nonetheless. Later Poirot realizes that Blunt had arranged the loaded pistol amongst the laurels so that it would go off when Carter was trimming them thus making it seem like another attempt had been made to kill Blunt.
8. Who was the last person to see Morley alive?

Answer: Alistair Blunt

Alistair Blunt shot Morley after his dental appointment. The next patient, Mabelle Sainsbury Seale, was in cahoots with Blunt. Mabelle had in fact already been murdered and the woman impersonating her was Blunt's first wife. This was Amberiotis' first visit to Morley and hence he didn't know that it was Blunt, not Morley, pretending to be the dentist. Blunt then administered the fatal dose of anesthetic to him.
9. What was the reason behind Mr. Barnes' interest in this case?

Answer: He was secret agent, Albert Chapman.

When Mabelle Sainsbury Seale's body was found, investigations revealed that the flat belonged to Albert Chapman and his wife had been living there for quite some time. She had also told some neighbours that her husband was involved in espionage work for the British government. Mr. Barnes was in fact secret agent Albert Chapman and as he had never married, he was curious about the woman claiming to be his wife.
10. Who had murdered Mr. Amberiotis and Mabelle Sainsbury Seale?

Answer: Alistair Blunt

Mabelle Sainsbury Seale had been a friend of Blunt's first wife, Gerda, and recognized him even though she was seeing him after many years. In order to keep his first marriage a secret, Blunt had to murder her. Later, Amberiotis started blackmailing him once he learnt of Blunt's earlier marriage through an accidental meeting with Mabelle. Blunt decided to administer an overdose of anesthetic to him during his appointment with the dentist and hence Morley had to be killed. Thus, he ended up committing three murders.

He was so full of himself and his own importance, that he considered his safety to be a matter of national interest and even tried to convince Poirot that his well-being was more important than delivering justice for the crimes committed.
