Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christopher always needs to know what the time is; we see this in the first sentence of the novel. What time is it in the opening scene?

Answer: 7 minutes after midnight

The exact time of day is so important to Christopher that it is stated repeatedly throughout the book. Once we even see Christopher panic and scream when a policeman tries to remove his watch.
2. Christopher likes prime numbers so much that he numbers the chapters with them and spends a chapter discussing them. In this chapter how does Christopher compare prime numbers to life?

Answer: They are very logical but you could never work out the rules.

Christopher describes prime numbers as what is left when you take all the patterns away; he knows every prime number up to 7,507.
3. In chapter 73 Christopher lists his Behavioural Problems. Which problem is not listed?

Answer: Walking off when I don't understand what someone is saying.

Christopher never once mentions his Asperger's Syndrome. He never considers himself to be disadvantaged by his Behavioural Problems, he simply acknowledges they are there.
4. "I think I would make a very good _________." Finish the quote, Chapter 83

Answer: astronaut

Christopher loves stars and space, referring them countless times in the book. It's his dream to become an astronaut.
5. Christopher spends chapter 101 discussing The Monty Hall Problem. What did Christopher say he liked about The Monty Hall problem?

Answer: Numbers are sometimes very complicated and not straight forward at all.

Logic is one of the things Christopher values very highly. He uses the Monty Hall problem to show how logic always gives a correct answer, no matter how complicated it is. This is as opposed to intuition which is often wrong.
6. In another one of Christopher's many digressions he mentions Occam's Razor which states: "Entia non sunt multiplicanda preater necessitatem." What does he say this means?

Answer: No more things should be presumed to exist than are absolutely necessary.

Christopher believes anyone that believes in fairies or ghost or heaven is silly because they are illogical things to believe in.
7. What reason did Christopher not give to explain why he likes dogs?

Answer: you can always trust them

The motif of the dog is seen throughout the novel. It creates a point of comparison that highlights the problems in humanity that Christopher can see but struggles to put words to. Christopher never says that you can always trust dogs but this idea is alluded to whenever dogs are mentioned.
8. What was Conway's Soldiers?

Answer: A maths problem

Whenever Christopher is scared he does maths calculations to calm down and feel safe. He thinks about Conway's Soldiers maths problem when he begins to panic in the busy Swindon train station.
9. "And this is why I like timetables because they make sure ___________." Finish the quote Chapter 193.

Answer: you don't get lost in time

Christopher views time as a puzzle that has never been solved. He compares being lost in time to being lost in a desert that you can't see because it is not a thing.
10. What were the last words of the book(excluding the Appendix)?

Answer: I can do anything

Despite all the confidence and resilience Christopher gains from his adventure, he remains unable to describe emotions, choosing to use an image of a smiling face instead. This shows that Christopher does not need to overcome his condition to be all that he wants to be and to believe that he can indeed, do anything.
