Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Homer's "Iliad" is an ancient Greek epic poem that focuses on the events of the Trojan War, especially the final weeks of the conflict. It is considered one of the greatest works of Western literature and is traditionally attributed to the poet Homer. The poem explores themes of heroism, honor, wrath, and the erratic nature of the gods in the context of war. Central to the story is the fierce warrior Achilles, whose anger at being dishonored by Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek forces, drives much of the plot. The "Iliad" examines human emotions, particularly rage and pride, and portrays the tragic consequences of war on both mortals and divine beings. It also offers a complex view of fate and destiny and the conflict between human actions and the will of the gods.
Many brave soldiers participated in the war on the Greek and the Trojan sides.
Among the Greeks, Idomeneus was the king of Crete and the leader of the Cretan forces which participated in the war with eighty black ships.
Neoptolemus was the son of Achilles and Deidamia and was as fierce in battle as his father. He killed six Trojans, including King Priam, after the fall of the city.
Nestor was the wise king of Pylos and father of Antilochus who was another one of the Achaeans in the Trojan War.
Diomedes was the king of Argos and after Achilles, one of the bravest warriors of the Greeks, together with Ajax the Great and Agamemnon.
Ajax the Great or Telamonios Ajax was the son of King Telamon of Salamis. In the Trojan War, he was among the fiercer warriors and he confronted Hector in a fight twice. After the death of Achilles, he claimed the hero's armor as did Odysseus. When Odysseus won it, Ajax felt such rage and shame that he fell on his sword and killed himself.
Calchas was not a warrior but a revered seer who accompanied the Greeks in the military campaign. He interpreted all the divine signs and gave the Greeks valuable advice.
Achilles is the main character in the "Iliad" and the greatest Greek warrior. He was the commander of the Myrmidons, the son of the Nereid Thetis, and Peleus, King of Phthia. Achilles was impregnable except for his heel and that's where Paris' lethal arrow struck him and caused his death.
Patroclus was the son of the Argonaut Menoetius. He was Achilles' wartime companion and closest friend. Patroclus was killed by Hector and his death saddened and enraged Achilles so much that he sacrificed twelve sons of Trojan nobles on his funeral pyre.
Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek army, was the king of Mycenae and the brother of Menelaus, Helen's husband. The "Iliad" begins with the fight between him and Achilles because Agamemnon took Achilles' war prize, a Trojan woman named Briseis.
