Question 1 of 10
1. Coach Dice just came in singing, "I Feel Pretty" for some odd reason (don't ask) and is starting the lecture on the first book, when Homer invokes the aid of a muse. Now he turns to you and asks, "Who or what is a muse and how many are there?" Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Coach Dice ran out of time yesterday, so he's continuing the lecture today. Apparently you're now his favorite to pick on, so he asks you, "What did Homer want help to write about when he invoked the aid of the muse?" Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Coach Dice came in today and said, "Everybody, get out your textbooks. We're going to study some of the epithets in the 'Odyssey'... Can you name a few for us?" Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Coach Dice is handing out the quiz over the first five books of the "Odyssey." The first question is, "While Odysseus is sailing from Ogygia, from where is Poseidon returning?" Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Coach Dice wasn't pleased with the scores on that test (not everyone did as well as you did), so he's giving everyone a second chance. Whichever of the tests you do better on will be your grade. The 1st question on this test is, "What did Polyphemus, the cyclops, say to Odysseus as he was sailing away?" Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Coach Dice decided to move on to other books of the Odyssey. Now we are taking a test that covers the first 15 books of the Odyssey. The first ten questions were extremely easy. The eleventh question is, "What did Circe say Odysseus could do to hear the Sirens, but not die in doing so?" Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Coach Dice is almost done covering "The Odyssey." So he's starting to review earlier books for the "Odyssey Final." He's passing out a worksheet that's due at the end of class. The majority of the worksheet is cake, but on Question 25, you're getting a little confused. The question is "What did Aeolus do for Odysseus?" Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. We just finished reading "the Odyssey" in class, so Coach Dice has decided to ask a few questions to make sure we were listening. He asks you, "How did Odysseus get the scar that Eurycleia recognized?" Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. The final exam for "The Odyssey" is here! The first question is, "What herb did Hermes give to Odysseus so that he couldn't be enchanted by Circe?" Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The last question on the "Odyssey Final" is, "What were the names of the islands where Circe and Calypso lived, respectively?" Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Coach Dice just came in singing, "I Feel Pretty" for some odd reason (don't ask) and is starting the lecture on the first book, when Homer invokes the aid of a muse. Now he turns to you and asks, "Who or what is a muse and how many are there?"

Answer: goddesses that inspired artists; 9

If you got this question right, Coach Dice said, "Yep, good for you, yadda yadda yadda. Back to the lecture."

If you got this question wrong, Coach Dice said, "Nope, you need to study; moving on."

In the beginning of "The Odyssey," Homer invoked the aid of a muse. Why, you ask? find out in the next information box.
2. Coach Dice ran out of time yesterday, so he's continuing the lecture today. Apparently you're now his favorite to pick on, so he asks you, "What did Homer want help to write about when he invoked the aid of the muse?"

Answer: To tell the tale of a man of many wiles.

If you got this question right, good for you. Coach Dice didn't embarrass you in class.

If you got this question wrong, nice try. Coach Dice just completely humiliated you in class (He said you just got served.)

The man Homer wants to write about is Odysseus. Homer also uses the epithet "a man of many wiles." An epithet is a phrase used to characterize the character's nature, an event, or an object.
*The option 'a man of many interests' wasn't far off, though. Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus slept with a few different women other than his wife. He spent a year sleeping with Circe, who had turned his men into pigs, and seven years with Calypso who kept him imprisoned during that time. He was almost literally her 'sex slave.'
3. Coach Dice came in today and said, "Everybody, get out your textbooks. We're going to study some of the epithets in the 'Odyssey'... Can you name a few for us?"

Answer: The gray-eyed goddess, the wine-dark sea, the white-armed Nausicaa.

If you got this question right, congratulations. You earned a homework pass.

If you got this question wrong, good effort, but Coach Dice embarrassed you in class and told you to study tonight because he's giving a quiz tomorrow.

In the "Odyssey," several examples of epithets are used. Such as the gray-eyed goddess or Pallas, Athena; the man of many wiles or Laertes' son, Odysseus; the rosy-fingered dawn, the sunrise; and the wine-dark sea, the ocean.
4. Coach Dice is handing out the quiz over the first five books of the "Odyssey." The first question is, "While Odysseus is sailing from Ogygia, from where is Poseidon returning?"

Answer: Ethiopia

If you got that question correct, great job. You aced that test.

If you got that question wrong, nice try. You got an 73.5% on that test. You barely got a 'C'.

In the fifth book, when 'the man of many wiles' is sailing home after seven years of imprisonment on Ogygia, Poseidon is returning from Ethiopia. Why was Poseidon in Ethiopia? The Ethiopians were the people Poseidon favored over all others and they were giving a feast and an offering to him.
5. Coach Dice wasn't pleased with the scores on that test (not everyone did as well as you did), so he's giving everyone a second chance. Whichever of the tests you do better on will be your grade. The 1st question on this test is, "What did Polyphemus, the cyclops, say to Odysseus as he was sailing away?"

Answer: That Odysseus shouldn't get home or that it should take a long time

If you got that question right, congratulations. You aced that test.

If you got that question wrong, not bad. You got 88% on that test.

As Odysseus was sailing away from the land of the cyclopes, Polyphemus cursed Odysseus. He prayed to his father, Poseidon, that Odysseus would never see his homeland again, but if the gods decided that he was fated to return home, then that day should be a long way away. This is an example of foreshadowing because it ends up taking around 20 years for Odysseus to return to Ithaca.
6. Coach Dice decided to move on to other books of the Odyssey. Now we are taking a test that covers the first 15 books of the Odyssey. The first ten questions were extremely easy. The eleventh question is, "What did Circe say Odysseus could do to hear the Sirens, but not die in doing so?"

Answer: Put honey in his men's ears and have himself tied to the mast.

If you got this question right, great effort. You got the highest grade in the class.

If you got this question wrong, Coach Dice said, "You're the only person in the class who got that question wrong. It looks like you've got three options: study, I call your parents and you study, or I put you in detention and you study. Any way you pick, you're going to end up studying.

Circe warned Odysseus and his men about Scylla and Charybdis, but knew that only Odysseus would live. As you can imagine, Odysseus didn't tell his men that.
7. Coach Dice is almost done covering "The Odyssey." So he's starting to review earlier books for the "Odyssey Final." He's passing out a worksheet that's due at the end of class. The majority of the worksheet is cake, but on Question 25, you're getting a little confused. The question is "What did Aeolus do for Odysseus?"

Answer: All of these.

If you got this question right, fantastic. You were the only person to get a 100 on that worksheet.

If you got this question wrong, nice try. You got a 92.5% on your worksheet. On the bright side, you got an 'A' and Coach Dice didn't chastise you.

The first time Odysseus and his men visited Aeolus's island, Aeolus was kind and helped them out. Odysseus and his men sailed from Aeolus's island to Ithaca. They got within eyesight, but Odysseus's men opened the bag full of harmful winds, thinking that it was full of treasure (Obviously Odysseus didn't tell his men what the bag held). The ship was blown back to Aeolus's island. When Odysseus begged Aeolus to help, Aeolus refused. Aeolus said that Odysseus and his men were cursed by a god and that he could do nothing to help.
8. We just finished reading "the Odyssey" in class, so Coach Dice has decided to ask a few questions to make sure we were listening. He asks you, "How did Odysseus get the scar that Eurycleia recognized?"

Answer: Hunting

If you got that question right, Coach Dice said, "Nice one, looks like you're ready for the final test."

If you got that question wrong, Coach Dice said, "Nope, go study or you're going to fail."

When Odysseus finally returned home, he decided to arrive disguised as a beggar so that the suitors wouldn't kill him upon arrival. The only person who recognized him was Eurycleia, Odysseus's servant who nursed him as a child. She recognized him by the scar on his leg that he received while hunting.
9. The final exam for "The Odyssey" is here! The first question is, "What herb did Hermes give to Odysseus so that he couldn't be enchanted by Circe?"

Answer: moly

If you got that question right, good for you. Just wait another minute to celebrate. The next question on this test was also on that "Odyssey" final.

If you got that question wrong, don't feel bad. The next question on this test was also on that "Odyssey" final.

Moly is a 'magical herb' that has black roots and white blossoms. It was thought that only a divine being (such as a god) could pick Moly.
10. The last question on the "Odyssey Final" is, "What were the names of the islands where Circe and Calypso lived, respectively?"

Answer: Aeaea; Ogygia

If you got that question right, congratulations! You just aced Coach Dice's curriculum on Homer's "The Odyssey." (That curriculum is 15% of your final grade.)

If you got that question wrong, nice try. You got a 88% on Coach Dice's curriculum on Homer's "The Odyssey." (That curriculum is 15% of your final grade.)

Odysseus spent a good deal of time on both Aeaea and Ogygia, but the big difference is the amount of time he spent on both. He spent only one year on Aeaea with Circe, whereas he spent seven years on Ogygia with Calypso. Although he didn't really have a choice on Ogygia; Calypso held him captive until Hermes came to have him released by order of the gods on Olympus.
