Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why is Marcellus exiled to Minoa?

Answer: For laughing at Prince Gaius

Marcellus is at a banquet for military Tribunes, and has been drinking heavily. He sees Prince Gauis sleeping, with his mouth wide open, and snoring loudly. Unable to control himself, Marcellus roars with laughter, resulting in his exile from Rome to Minoa, a forgotten province ruled by the Romans.
2. When does Marcellus first become horrified and guilty about crucifying Jesus of Nazareth, whom he believes was an innocent man?

Answer: While he is at the Tribune's Banquet

Marcellus first realizes what he had done at the Tribune's Banquet, which took place after the crucifixion. His assistant, Centurion Pallus, who is very drunk, forces Marcellus to put on Jesus' robe for the drunken crowd. After he does, Marcellus becomes overcome with guilt and leaves the banquet early.
3. Demetrius falls in love with Theodosia, and eventually marries her. Who is Theodosia?

Answer: The daughter of Dion, the innkeeper in Athens.

Demetrius meets Theodosia while he and Marcellus are staying in Athens. Although he is a slave, they become friends, and Demetrius eventually leaves Rome to marry her and spread Christianity in Greece, where he is also from.
4. Why was Marcellus allowed to stay at Dion's inn in Athens?

Answer: He had half of a coin given to his father as a token by Dion's father.

When Marcellus' father, Senator Gallio, had traveled through Greece as a young man, he had stayed at the inn, which was then run by Dion's father. Because Dion's father was so impressed with the young Gallio, he had given him half of a coin, to which he owned the other half.

He promised Gallio that anyone who came to the inn bearing Gallio's half of the coin would be accepted and treated with hospitality.
5. When he first arrived at Arpino, what was Marcellus' job?

Answer: As a melon-picker

Upon arriving at Arpino, Marcellus applied to be a scrivener for Kaiso, the master of Arpino. However, angry at being yelled at by Kaiso, Marcellus left to pick melons with the other servants. Later Kaiso was friendlier and hired Marcellus as his scrivener.
6. Why are Marcellus and Diana executed by Prince Gaius?

Answer: For refusing to renounce Christianity

After wedding in Arpino, Marcellus and Diana return to Rome to spread Christianity. Upon their arrival, Marcellus is arrested by Caligula, and refusing to renounce his faith, is condemned to death. Diana is also a Christian and decides to die with Marcellus rather than renounce Christianity and live in Caligula's palace.
7. Who did Marcellus meet in Palestine who was crippled, but was comforted by Jesus, and sang every night for the town?

Answer: Miriam, a young woman who did beautiful embroidery

During his travels through Palestine with his guide, Justus, Marcellus met Miriam, a friend of Justus', in Cana. Crippled several years ago, Miriam was distraught until she met Jesus, who comforted and cared for her. After this visit, she became joyful, and sang Jewish praise songs for the village every night.
8. Why, after his horror about the crucifixion was over, did Marcellus keep Jesus' robe?

Answer: It reminded him of his healing and reconciliation.

After Marcellus had been forgiven and rid of his terrible guilt, he kept Jesus' robe as a symbol of his dedication to serving him, and of Jesus' forgiveness and care in his life. Before Marcellus and Diana were executed, they gave the robe to a Christian servant of Marcellus, to be given to Simon Peter, Jesus' most loyal follower, and the leader of the Christians.
9. Marcellus married his sister Lucia's best friend, Diana. Lucia also married Marcellus' best friend. Who did she marry?

Answer: Tullus, a fellow Tribune in Rome

While Marcellus is in Israel, Lucia marries Marcellus' best friend in Rome, Tullus. When Marcellus returns home and learns of the news, he is glad, for Tullus, Marcellus' closest friend and a Tribune, will be a good husband for Lucia. She had always been in love with him anyway.
10. What does Diana say to Emperor Caligula just before she and Marcellus are executed?

Answer: She has another King, and another Kingdom.

Before Marcellus and Diana are executed, Diana tells Caligula that he is not her King. She is a Christian, and she and Marcellus would not like to live in a land ruled by tyrants and wicked rulers. They have another King, Jesus, and another Kingdom, Heaven, and would rather die to go there than save their lives and renounce their faith.
