Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In David Edding's "The Elenium" trilogy, what colour completes the third title? "The ________ Rose".

Answer: Sapphire

"The Elenium" trilogy is a fantasy adventure following the adventures of Sparhawk, a knight who could be straight out of medieval literature. He has to find a magic jewel, free his Queen from an evil spell and defeat the agents of darkness. Throw in some magical creatures and an ancient god or two and you have a classic fantasy series.

The three books in the series are "The Diamond Throne", "The Ruby Knight" and "The Sapphire Rose".
2. Which of the following is a P.D. James novel featuring Adam Dalgleish?

Answer: The Black Tower

Published in 1975 "The Black Tower" sees Adam Dalgleish asked for advice by an old friend who is Chaplain at a nursing home. By the time he arrives at the home his friend is dead, as is one of the patients. As with all Adam Dalgleish novels the suspense builds slowly until the inevitable unmasking of the murderer takes place.
3. "The Blue Nowhere" is by an author better known for his novels about a paraplegic detective. Who wrote it?

Answer: Jeffrey Deaver

In a departure from his Lincoln Rhymes novels Jeffrey Deaver moves to the world of cyber crime. "The Blue Nowhere" features a contest between two computer hackers, one of whom has found a way to make people kill themselves.
The hero is verging on being an anti hero, having been released from jail to help the police find and stop the killer before he strikes again.
4. Can you name the Stephen King book from this list?

Answer: The Green Mile

This 1996 book was originally released in serial form over six volumes. At the time Stephen King said he was trying to recreate the way Dickens published many of his novels. It was later re-released as a single volume. It tells the story of John Coffey, a most unusual death row inmate in Louisiana, and the relationship he builds with one of his guards.

It was later made into a film starring Tom Hanks.
5. "The White Dragon" is one of the "Dragonriders of Pern" series by which author?

Answer: Anne McCaffrey

The "Dragonriders of Pern" series is a hugely popular fantasy series set on the planet of Pern, which has been colonised by settlers from Earth. From time to time the planet is threatened by spores from a wandering star which destroy everything they touch. Dragons, which are telepathically linked with their riders, can destroy these threads with their flame. "The White Dragon" tells the tale of Ruth, the dragon, and Jaxom, his rider. Ruth is white, which is not a normal dragon colour, and Jaxom was not supposed to link with a dragon, so the pair are something of an oddity and a problem.
6. "Red Dragon" is one of several books about which fictional serial killer?

Answer: Hannibal Lecter

"Red Dragon" by Thomas Harris is set prior to the events in "Silence of the Lambs". Both books focus on psychiatrist turned serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. In "Red Dragon" the events leading up to the imprisonment of Hannibal Lecter are shown, and, as happened in "The Silence of the Lambs", the subsequent help needed from him in tracking another serial killer.

In this case the "Tooth Fairy". Both books have been made into films starring Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter.
7. James Patterson has written two books in his Alex Cross series where the titles are part of an old rhyme. The first is "Roses are Red", what is the second?

Answer: Violets are Blue

"Roses are Red" and "Violets are Blue" are linked books. "Violets are Blue" picks up where "Roses are Red" stopped. They are both in the series featuring Dr Alex Cross. In both books he is chasing a criminal called "Mastermind". Both books also feature FBI agent Kyle Craig, who turns out to be something other than a normal law enforcement agent.

The most common version of the old rhyme is
"Roses are red, violets are blue
Sugar is sweet and so are you".
8. Can you complete the title of the novel by Marvin Kaye? "A Cold_______ Light"

Answer: Blue

"A Cold Blue Light" is a supernatural horror story set around Aubrey House. Something lives in the house that glows with a strange blue light. Following the death of the mistress of the house a group of people gather there, all determined to unlock the secret of the light.
9. Which book by Ellen Klages tells the story of an eleven year old living at Los Alamos at the time of the Manhattan Project?

Answer: Green Glass Sea

"Green Glass Sea" is a story of innocence. An 11 year old girl goes to live with her father, who is working on the Manhattan Project. She, and a lot of the scientists working on the project, have no idea of how their work will change the world. Originally published in 1943, and out of print for some years, this book has recently been republished.
10. "How Green Was My Valley" is the story of a mining community in which country?

Answer: Wales

Written by Richard Llewellyn, "How Green Was My Valley" is the story of the Morgans, a family of miners living in the Welsh valleys. It is set in Victorian times. The story is told by the youngest son, Huw, and reflects the hardships and tragedies that affected all mining communities in those times.
It was made into a film starring Walter Pidgeon and Maureen O'Hara with Roddy McDowell as Huw.
