Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Making his first appearance in 'The Empire Strikes Back', what is the name of the evil emperor from the 'Star Wars' series of films?

Answer: Palpatine

Actor Ian McDiarmid portrays the Emperor Palpatine in the 'Star Wars' series, appearing in all but the original 1977 film. In the original film release of 'The Empire Strikes Back', it was Clive Revill who provided the emperor's voice. However, in the special DVD release, McDiarmid's face has been added and his voice replaces that of Revill.
2. In which fantastic film of the 1980s does Jeffrey Jones play the role of the music loving Emperor Joseph II of Austria?

Answer: Amadeus

Ian Richardson was originally meant to play the part of Emperor Joseph, but Jeffrey Jones was called in to replace him. Jones provides an excellent performance as 'a man who really has no ear for music at all', according to the Salieri character.

The story in 'Amadeus' revolves around the rivalry between the relatively untalented Salieri and the acknowledged genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
3. Lots of Roman emperors have appeared in film. For example, the upright Emperor Marcus Aurelius makes an appearance in the action flick 'Gladiator' (2000). Which actor played this role?

Answer: Richard Harris

While Richard Harris plays Marcus Aurelius, Joaquin Phoenix is Commodus, his son and eventual replacement on the Roman throne. Russell Crowe stars as Maximus, a Roman general, and Oliver Reed is Proximo, an owner and trainer of gladiators.
4. Another Roman emperor question, if I may. In which 1959 film is the Charlton Heston character, a galley slave and convict, pardoned by the Roman emperor Tiberius, played by George Relph?

Answer: Ben Hur

'Ben Hur' is a story about redemption. Charlton Heston plays the title role, a wealthy Jewish aristocrat from Judea who is condemned to row in a Roman galley after he refuses to collaborate with his former friend Messala, the commander of a Roman legion. Naturally, Ben Hur eventually gets his revenge!
5. Which Hollywood actor stars in the 2003 film 'The Last Samurai', a film that features Shichinosuke Nakamura as the Meiji Emperor?

Answer: Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise plays Nathan Algren, an American military officer who is hired by the Japanese Meiji Emperor to train the Japanese army in modern military tactics.

The real Meiji Emperor presided over the modernization of Japan that took place during the latter decades of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century.
6. The beautiful 1987 film 'The Last Emperor' revolves around the story of a child who is placed on the Chinese throne, the last person ever to have achieved the honor. What is the name of the boy emperor?

Answer: Pu Yi

The story in 'The Last Emperor' follows the life of Pu Yi from his days as the child emperor all the way until his death in the 1960s. John Lone plays Pu Yi as an adult, and three other actors portray him as a child.
7. Which unusual and often beautiful David Lynch-directed film from 1984 features an emperor, played by José Ferrer, named Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV?

Answer: Dune

This film only covers the beginning of the 'Dune' series, written by Frank Herbert. Alongside Ferrer, the film also features Kyle MacLachlan, Virginia Madsen, Linda Hunt, Sting, Jürgen Prochnow, Patrick Stewart and a number of other notable actors.

8. Which emperor of history is featured as a character in films entitled 'Hearts Divided' (1936), 'Austerlitz' (1960) and 'Waterloo' (1970)?

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte

Claude Rains plays the famous European conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte in the 1936 film 'Hearts Divided'. Pierre Mondy takes his turn as the diminutive Napoleon in the 1960 French-made epic 'Austerlitz'. The 1970 film 'Waterloo' features Rod Steiger as the great French emperor.
9. In the 2000 Disney animated film 'The Emperor's New Groove', what is the name of the Incan emperor?

Answer: Kuzco

David Spade provides the voice of Emperor Kuzco in this silly animated comedy. John Goodman and Eartha Kitt also provide their voices for the movie.
10. Here's another Roman emperor question to round out this quiz. Viewed by many as one of the worst films of all time, which Roman emperor is portrayed by Malcolm McDowell in the 1979 movie with the same title?

Answer: Caligula

Produced by 'Penthouse Magazine' publisher Bob Guccione, the film is directed by Tinto Brass. Alongside McDowell appears British acting luminaries Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud and Helen Mirren. The film attempts to tell the story of the very demented Roman emperor Caligula, but gets bogged down in bizarre scenes of sex and violence. This is not a family film!
