Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finish this quote, spoken by General Lee (Martin Sheen), to Longstreet (Tom Berenger) on June 30. "An actor? We move ____?"

Answer: on the word of an actor

Harrison was the name of the spy. He really was an actor, and he went back to the profession after the war. He survived the fighting at Gettysburg on July 3. His information about the location of the Union Army was entirely accurate, and a big help to Lee.
2. Finish this quote, spoken by Hood (Patrick Gorman) to Longstreet, before the battle on July 2. "They don't even need guns to defend that. All they need to do is ____."

Answer: roll rocks down on us

Hood's men had to attack up a steep hill where the Union Army would have a great advantage. The battle turned out to be a disaster.
3. Finish this quote, spoken by Longstreet concerning Pickett (Stephen Lang). "He graduated last! Dead last, ____."

Answer: which is quite a feat when you consider his classmates

Pickett commanded one of Longstreet's divisions. The division consisted of three brigades commanded by Generals Armistead, Garnett, and Kemper. All three died or were wounded on the third day at Gettysburg. Although he had horrible grades during military training, he was a good general, and survived the war. After the war, he moved to Bellingham, Washington.
4. Finish this quote, spoken by Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels), in his speech to the 2nd Maine mutineers. "What we're fighting for, in the end: _____."

Answer: we're fighting for each other

There were 120 mutineers from the 2nd Maine, and all were sent to Chamberlain. Although he was given permission to shoot any who would not obey, he instead gave an inspirational speech. All but three of the men agreed to fight in Chamberlain's regiment!
5. Finish this quote, spoken by Lee to himself, and then to Heth (Warren Burton) on July 1, when he tried to decide whether his men should attack. "God's will. General, ____."

Answer: you may attack

Originally, General Lee did not want Heth or any others to attack until he was better prepared and reinforced. However, he changed his mind and sent his men into the fight on July 1, 1863, the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
6. Finish this quote, spoken by Lee to Longstreet, before the battle on July 2. "To be a good soldier, you must love the army. To be a good _____."

Answer: commander, you must be able to order the death of the thing you love

Interestingly enough, at Gettysburg, and especially on the third day, that was exactly what Lee did. He ordered the deaths of thousands of men in his army, the army which he loved. Although at every battle, a general sends many men to their deaths, this one was especially tragic, and the casualties were much higher than the average.
7. Finish this quote, spoken by Lee to Stuart (Joseph Fuqua), who had foolishly gone on a raid. "You, with your cavalry, are the eyes of this army. Without your cavalry, _____."

Answer: we are made blind

Many historians believe that Stuart's immature action was a large part of the reason that Gettysburg was such a disaster for the South. Although the raid itself was a success, it would have been far better for Stuart to keep in contact with Lee and keep him posted on the enemy position.
8. Finish this quote, spoken by Chamberlain to his brother, Tom (C. Thomas Howell), on July 2. (A cannon ball had just landed about six yards away.) "Another one a bit closer, and ____."

Answer: it will be a hard day for Mother

Chamberlain wanted to stay away from Tom so that if a bomb struck, they would not both be killed at the same time. Both men survived the battle.
9. Finish this quote, spoken by Tom to Chamberlain, concerning the death of Kilrain (Kevin Conway). "I tell you Lawrence, ____."

Answer: I sure was fond of that man

Kilrain was wounded in the armpit during the Battle of Little Round Top. The doctors said that his heart gave out. Kilrain was one of the oldest men in the regiment, and had quickly become like a father to Chamberlain and Tom.
10. Finish this quote, spoken by Pickett to Lee, when the men were retreating on July 3. "General Lee, _____."

Answer: I have no division

Pickett's casualties were extremely high. This statement hit Lee hard. After the Battle of Gettysburg, it seemed that the Confederates slowly declined in their morale and success.
