Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who does actor Stephen Lang play in this movie?

Answer: George Pickett

George Pickett commands one of James Longstreet's divisions. Pickett is rather eccenric and very passionate for the cause. Interestingly enough, Stephen Lang went on to play Stonewall Jackson in Ron Maxwell's "Gods and Generals", which is the prequel to "Gettysburg".
2. Generals Longstreet and Lee are discussing their strategy for the upcoming engagement. Longstreet, played by Tom Berenger, informs Lee that General Meade is now in command of the Union Army. What does General Lee, played by Martin Sheen, reply?

Answer: "George Meade--a Pennsylvania man. Meade will be cautious I think."

Meade arrives on the battlefield on the evening of July 1. Meade is indeed cautious, and actually wants to leave his position at Gettysburg, but his subordinates convince him not to, and the battle is an overwhelming victory for the Union Army.
3. What is the name of General Lee's Chief of Staff?

Answer: Major Taylor

Major Walter H. Taylor, played by actor Bo Brinkman, is considered one of the most competent military aides in the country. He is known for his efficiency and dependability, and is very trusted by Lee.
4. Generals Armistead, played by Richard Jordan, and Garnett, played by Andrew Prine, are both mortally wounded on the third day of fighting at Gettysburg.

Answer: True

After being wounded, Armistead relates a message which he wishes to have delivered to Hancock, who is also critically wounded. Armistead dies a Union prisoner, but Hancock survives the war. Dick Garnett rides a horse into battle because of a foot injury, and is blown off his horse by a cannon shot.
5. Who asks General Longstreet, payed by Tom Berenger, for permission to join the fight on July 3?

Answer: Harrison

The spy, Harrison, played by Cooper Huckabee, does join in the fight on July 3, 1863. He lives through it, and later returns to his career as an actor in the South.
6. Who comes to Lee on July 1 and requests another assignment?

Answer: Trimble

Trimble, played by William Morgan Sheppard, is outraged at General Ewell, played by Timothy Scott, for not taking the large rocky hill at Gettysburg, called Culp's Hill. Trimble no longer wants to serve under Ewell, but General Lee refuses his request. Trimble then commands one of the divisions that takes part in Pickett's charge on July 3, 1863.
7. On July 2, Longstreet and Lee are walking along when they see General Stuart arrive on horseback. Stuart has been gone for days and has sent no word of his or the enemy's movements. Lee remarks, "It would appear that General Stuart has returned." What is Longstreet's mumbled reply?

Answer: "Prodigal son."

This quote implies that Longstreet believes Lee is too fond of Stuart, and does not treat him harshly enough. By not sending information, Stuart did indeed act irresponsibly. Although Lee does love the young and dashing General Stuart, played by Joseph Fuqua, a scene in the movie shows Lee very harshly reprimanding Stuart for letting the army down. Lee tells him, "Without your cavalry, we are made blind."
8. This film is based on the book "The Killer Angels", which was written by Jeff Shaara.

Answer: False

Michael Shaara, Jeff's father, wrote "The Killer Angels", which became the movie "Gettysburg". Jeff then wrote "Gods and Generals", the prequel to "The Killer Angels", and "The Last Full Measure", the sequel. Ron Maxwell directed "Gods and Generals", starring Stephen Lang, Jeff Daniels, and Robert Duvall.
9. Who commands the 20th Maine Regiment of Volunteers?

Answer: Colonel Chamberlain

Chamberlain, played by Jeff Daniels, orders a right wheel forward when his regiment runs out of ammunition while defending Little Round Top. He is warmly congratulated by Colonel Rice.
10. Which of the following generals is seriously wounded on July 3?

Answer: Winfield Hancock

Hancock, played by Brian Mallon, receives a serious wound and states, "I will not be moved until this engagement has been decided." Miraculously, Hancock recovers from the injury and survives the war.
